AE only using 15% of cpus and 2 gig or so of ram
Hello,
I went out and bought a new system because is seemed prudent considering I was learning CS4, I was running a quad core, 8 gigs of ram and it seemed 5 hours was a bit to wait for renders on stuff.So, I bought the Intel Skulltrail 2 processor motherboard, 2 qx9775 3.2 ghz processors and 16 gb or ram, and the ATI radeon 4870hd x2 (2gb) on vista ultimate.
AE is only using 15% of cpu’s and 2 gig or so of ram and the same project takes the same amount of time. I have selected multiprocessing in the options, but no real change.
Hmmm, Anyone explain that?

The system itself have limitations. No matter how many quadrizillions GB of ram you have – the system will let one application use no more than 2, 3 or 4GB, depending on the system.
I have some macs with Leopard, and it assigns 3GB of ram to one app. On one of my computers I have Windows XP 64bit, and get 4GB of RAM for one application.
Multiprocessing will also not solve the problem. Sometimes you get your renders faster when you don’t use multiprocessing.You say 5 hours… Hmmm. Is it long? That depends. Maybe it is just what it takes. Patience my friend. That’s what we are left with.

Hopefully, your Windows Vista is the 64bit edition and not the 32. On a PC, 32 bit operating systems aren’t going to recognize, or even show, a 4th GB or RAM, let alone all the RAM you have. Furthermore, on a 32 bit Windows system, your system is probably set by default to use 2GB of RAM on an app. You can go in your boot.ini file and change the /2GB to /3GB to at least use 3GB.
If you do have Vista 64 bit, which the system you have needs, it should run extremely well. Your processors and RAM are more than needed for running multiple CS4 tasks. Your graphics card is extremely good also, although I would say it underperforms at top nVidia card in most of the graphical benchmarks that would matter to a CS4 user, but we’re not here to debate that =)
