A friend who no longer makes new DVD’s of his holiday has asked if it’s possible to make a compilation DVD of the favorite chapters from his old DVD’s. I know that this can be done but I have concerns that since these old DVD’s are likely to have been encoded at different bit rates & aspect ratios. I’m concerned about loosing quality because some/all files might have to rerendered. I have an idea about how to do this but wanted confirmation to see if I’m on the right track.

I could use a program like DVDShrink to capture out the necessary chapters & this would then give me a series of VOB files each of which should be smaller the 1GB. I could import the VOB’s into Vegas 8 & add them all to the timeline but I suspect that if I were to do this rerendering would occur. Is this correct?

I also know that I could also convert the VOB files back into MPEG2 files with other tools & this would not require rerendering of each separate file. But what happens if I put the different MPEG2 files onto the timeline to create a new file, will rerendering occur? Alternatively if I just took the new MPEG2 files into DVDA & dragged each onto a new menu would this cause the files to be rendered?

Since at least one or more chapter will be 16×9 & the balance 4×3 ratio that the project in Vegas and/or DVDA will have to 16×9. What effect or problems would this cause?

    Thanks in advance
