Vegas 9: Media Offline (saw multiple threads on this, no answer)
So I was able to open up my Vegas 8 file in Vegas 9, but none of the videos from my external hard drive are showing up (Media Offline). On the other hand, I have a couple of video files that are saved on the laptop itself, but those are showing up. And, of course, the audio for ALL of the files is appearing. Soooo, why is SV9 having an issue reading the video from the external?
I saw a few other threads on this in the past regarding SV8, but no worthy solutions.
– Unchecking the “close media files when not active application” has no effect on this type of issue.
– Someone in the past mentioned codecs? Could this be the issue? -

Yes, I tried right clicking on the videos in project media and hitting “recapture offline media,” but nothing happens… nothing even pops up.

I see this all the time, and I ignore it because when the timeline says “media offline”, it is always really online. Try playing an offline event.

I tried playing an offline event and all I see is a black screen in the preview screen; in fact, I’ve tried rendering the offline events as well, but all that renders is the audio… no video (again, black screen).
I know of the pop-up box to which you’re referring, and I never clicked “ignore missing files…” because that box never appeared… even when I first opened the file.
NAS? I’m not familiar with that. The media is on a Wetern Digital external HD. Mapped drive? As long as the computer reads the HD, then I assume Sony Vegas can, no? Either way, if the audio is being picked up, then Vegas is obviously seeing the HD, but for some reason only bringing in the audio.

Well, the file was originally a Vegas 8 file, with no “offline media” issues, but when the file was unable to render (despite having 4 GB of memory, I kept running into “low memory” issues because the file consisted of clips from over 150 full-length movies), I figured an upgraded Sony Vegas 9 would be able to successfully render the video.
When I opened the Vegas 8 file in Vegas 9, however, I ran into this “media offline” issue for the video portion of the clips and was never asked to “search for the missing files.” I was thankful when I saw that I was finally able to render the video, but disappointed when I realized only the audio was rendering.
Additionally, I also have a few video clips that are saved onto the laptop itself (as opposed to the external), and those videos show up fine in the Vegas 9 file… so clearly it is just an issue with Vegas 9 reading the videos from the external HD (although for some reason it can still read the audio from these videos on the external!)
And yes, when I’m looking at the timeline, only the audio appears as online. The video portions all have the (Media Offline) within each clip. If the problem is, in fact, a lack of codecs, do you have any idea which ones would suffice? Maybe K-lite?

Everything the same? No, the only thing that ALL of them have in common is that they’re on the same external hard drive.
I can’t copy all of the videos to the local drive as there isn’t enough space, but I did just purchase a new external and I copied all of the videos over to that. When I opened up the file this time, the pop-up asking to look for the files DID appear and I specified that it look in the new external. Unfortunately, still the videos did not show… only the audio.
And no, I never moved the errant files.

Yesssss! Even though I haven’t solved the issue, that just made my night!
Now that this thread is low on the page, I have a feeling nobody is gonna step in! I’m assuming codec issues are easily solved… maybe there’s already another thread out there that explains what I need to do?

Kapeesh.
Now, I just downloaded and installed ffdshow, restarted my comp, opened up the file, but still no video. I’m almost positive the answer is no, but I should double check anyway… once I install ffdshow on my computer, is there anything else I need to do in order for Vegas to pick it up? Vegas should automatically use the codec, correct?
Also, I had tried a few other codecs a couple of days ago that failed to work… should I have uninstalled those ones before I installed ffdshow or can they work simultaneously? (pretty sure they can work simultaneously, but again I feel I should at least ask).
Finally, most of the videos on the external are .avi (although there are a few .mp4 and those videos aren’t showing either). How do I figure out which codecs these movies are in?

Grab a copy of GSpot Codec Information Appliance, drop a questionable file on it and let us know what it says it needs for a codec.

Ha, I went to download G-Spot and realized I already had it…
The vast majority of the files are MPG4’s, mainly XVIDs… but every single one says “Codec(s) installed.”
