    Greetings,
I’ve been dealing with a buggy problem that I cannot seem to resolve for several months. In short, my footage plays back normally in several different cameras,(so I think the footage is fine), but once I capture it into Vegas – it gets an audio stutter with some drop outs and some picture artifacts. Occasionally when capturing the footage, Vegas will notify me of a dropped frame, but this is not a widespread or frequent problem.

I just installed Vegas 9 to see if my versions of 7 and 8 were compromised somehow. I thought the problem was solved, until I put footage on the timeline, then the problem started again. I have a Friday deadline for a short project, so if anyone has heard of this issue before and can help me solve it – I would be so very grateful.

A few important facts – since this problem has been ongoing, yet inconsistant – the recent footaqe was shot in 30i on a Panasonic DVX-100a. The capture camera I use is a small consumer $200 Samsung miniDV cam. My computer is a Gateway with plenty of hard drive space. The footage is captured to an external hard drive with plenty of space. The tapes are Sony miniDV tapes. The problem exists on footage from several different tapes. I have had the same problem in Vegas 7 and 8 in the last 8 months with Panasonic tapes, and footage shot on Canon XL1 and Sony PD150. The footage is in 4:3 aspect ratio. It does not seem to matter if other programs are open or not.

I cannot think of anything that has changed with my system or process in the last 8 month when the problem started. Same capture camera, same CPU, same DVX-100a.

All suggestions and advice are most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Cami

Have you tried it with a different capture camera?
My suspicion is that there may be something mechanically wrong with the Samsung that is causing these problems.
If you have a friend that has Vegas on their computer, try capturing to it with this camera and see if the problem persists.
If nothing happens, it would rule out the camera as a problem which means looking elsewhere.

I did. I just clicked on it and played it in Windows Media Player and it had the same problem. I also can play the raw footage fine in the same camera I am using to capture.

I am going to try to capture with another camera tonight and see if that helps.

    Thanks for responding,
    Cami

I have lined up another camera to try for tonight. I do have another friend with Vegas and will try the opposite way too. The reason why I didn’t think it was the camera is because it has worked fine in the past, and the tape play normally in the camera when not being captured. I will test these suggestions and report back.

    Thanks for responding,
    Cami

    Hi Cami
Do you run other applications while capturing? If so do not as some programs are cpu hungry and can cause frmaes to drop out. Also it would be best if you could capture to a secondary hard drive in your machine IDE or S-ata even better instead of an external drive as access times to these drives via USB are slower.

Thanks for the tip. I think my anti-virus software may have been kicking on in the background. Even with nothing running, I get a dropped frame every now and then. Fortunately I mostly work in documentary film, so I have a high ratio of footage and able to cut around it.

    Thanks again,
    Cami

I was able to borrow another miniDV camera to try to capture on my system. It seems to work much better, but since the problem was intermittent in the first place . . .I am cautiously optimistic. At any rate, everyone’s advice helped me get my project back on track.

    Thanks!
    Cami
