  • Whites on Video Flicker when rendered as AVI in Vegas Pro 9

Posted by Ever Giron on October 5, 2009 at 5:08 pm

I just upgraded to Vista 64bit, I’m using Vegas Pro 9, latest built (771 from August 09) and now when I render any project as AVI any white colors on the video flicker at any given time, like generated text that is white, teeth, shirt and sometimes the outline of a person. I noticed that it does not happen when outputting as a QuickTime. The problem is that for me to print to tape using the IEEE 1394/DV option I have to render it as AVI, if I used the QuickTime, Vegas would have to pre-render it as AVI and the same thing happens.

    Any advice?

    Thank you,

I stand to be corrected but I believe that QuickTime uses the full 0-255 luminance range while Vegas is limited to 16-235.
If your whites go over the 235 limit, than you’ll get the behaviour you’re seeing.
    Solutions?
Use the Level or Color Curves controls to limit your whites to 235 (100 IRE on the waveform display).

I think the white levels are below the limit, the flickering only happens when I render as AVI and not as QuickTime, both renderings are done within VEGAS Pro 9. Here is a small sample of an AVI showing the flickering specially on the white parts and mostly on Generated Text.

I saw no flickering white when I viewed the clip on my laptop. But Mikes suggestion is worth checking out raher than just passing it off. It was the same thought that I had. Just readjust the white level and renderout a small segment and see if it helps.

Yes, definitely check your white level- you can do this using scopes in Vegas. Also, try applying the Computer to Studio RGB if you are intending on watching this on a TV as opposed to a computer screen.

It sounds like you have exceeded the acceptable white level and entered into superwhites, which can cause problems when viewing.

The flickering is definitely there on my desktop machine.
Re-do your titles, drop the whites down to 235-235-235 and raise the blacks to 16-16-16.
Another trick (to make the edges cleaner) is to double the size of your text from 720 x 480 to 1440 x 960 for NTSC or 1440 x 1152 for PAL
This is done in the Fame Size box (upper left in the Edit tab) in your text event.
This won’t affect anything in the text event.
