  Level on audio recording

  Using Vegas Pro 8 – recording audio for the first time (Edirol UA-101 soundcard) with mic. The level as indicated on the strip in Vegas is showing what looks like the correct level, but the volume actually recorded is quite low (also as visually seen on the wave image). What am I doing wrong?

  Hi Hiran,

  What are the levels indicated when recording; and then on playback?

  Do you have all of your equipment calibrated with a reference tone so that all input/output levels match at the source?

  Thanks for responding Tommy.

  The level when recording is just below going into red. But the wave being recorded is very small. When playing back it is soft, and the volume is consistent with the small wave.

  I don’t know about calibrating with a reference tone. Where can I learn about that for Vegas Pro? (I’ll check the Help also). I thought, as Vegas shows that a loud input is being received it would be an issue withing Vegas?

  Hiran, my experience (using an external M-Audio box) is that if the incoming audio appears to be at the correct level, then it is so you need to look elsewhere for a solution.
  Do you have a volume envelope on the track?
  Is the track being routed through a bus anywhere?
  Is the record input set to stereo, let or right?
  Are all the various faders (track volume, pan, master volume, etc.) at their default settings?
  Is there any automation on the track?
  Is this a brand new project?

  An update. (Solved)

  Most probably the reason for ‘shallow’ wave form was low input level from my mic – even though I though I had everything on max.

  I fixed the problem by (on the clip) RightClick > Switches > Normalise. (NOTE: Options > Preferences > Audio has a setting Normalise Peak Level which I kept at 0.0 db)

  Question on calibration: Is there somewhere I can measure the input level coming out of my soundcard? It is set to max but still Vegas hears it as ‘low’. (the mic is a Rode-NTG2, soundcard Edirol UA-101 USB 2)
