Qs regarding HD. I have family photos taken with these three cameras:
    Nikon, 3872 x 2592, 1.4938 (aspect ratio)
    Canon, 2816 x 2112, 1.3333
    Olympus, 2560 x 1920, 1.3333

First, the rule of “use 2x your target resolution” would only apply to the Nikon as 2 x 1920 (or 3840) is larger than the image taken with the Canon or Olympus … so I’d just have to make due with those photos.

If I was to use full HD (1920 x 1080), then I would get something like this:
    2x HD, 3840 x 2160, 1.7778 (aspect ratio)
    Nikon, 1613 x 1080
    Canon, 1440 x 1080
    Olympus, 1440 x 1080

in other words, full HD height but with black bars on each side since the source photos aren’t in the 1.7778 ratio.

Of course, I could take (e.g.) a Nikon photo and crop it to 2178 thus giving me:
    3872 x 2178 which is 1.7778.

When I take such a cropped image and drop it into an HD project, it is full HD (width and height).

    So my 2 Qs are:

[a] Do you normally crop images (of course not whacking somebody’s head off) to convert a DSLR photo to HD? Or do you normally leave black bars and capture the full image?

[b] Which of these three Vegas Templates (Project Properties) do you use and why?
    HD 1080-60i (1920×1080, 29.970 fps)
    HD 1080-50i (1920×1080, 25.000 fps)
    HD 1080-24p (1920×1080, 23.976 fps)

    Thanks in advance.

    (a) My still images almost always get cropped, but that’s because I’m a crappy photographer. If you’ve spent a lot of time artistically composing your shots, then black letterboxing bars are better than ruining the composition. In a video setting, however, you can do both with a little “Ken Burns” panning. I’d crop first at the clip level (which is working with the full resolution of the photo) and then use the Track Motion tool as necessary.

    (b) You project template depends almost entirely on your destination format. For Vimeo/YouTube, I’d recommend:

    1280×720
    24p
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0

If you are going out to HDTV/Blue-ray, then the 1920×1080@29.97 preset is fine.
