Error
I’ve just recently had my computer cleared of all previous memory because some of the files were infected by viruses. However, before the files could be deleted, I stored them on my sister’s laptop by using a memory stick to transfer them. As far as I know, none of the memory was lost in the process; the files still look the same.
But now, when I loaded Sony Vegas 8.0 and the project that I was working on back onto the computer, there was an error message that read:
Warning: An error occured accessing project media.
Some streams in the media file could not be opened.~~~
And the only thing that loads on is the audio.
Is there a certain codec that I need for this?

What I mean is, when I try to replace the files that say “Media Offline” on them, I get that error message.
The actual project file loads on fine, it’s just that all of the videos that I used IN the project won’t load on.Sorry that I didn’t make that clear in my last post.

It sounds like you have a missing codec. Use a tool like GSpot to determine which codec the files use and then install the codec that is needed.

GSpot says that the Codec is installed.

Okay. I downloaded GSpot again, and now it says that the codec is NOT installed. It indicates that I need an xvid codec. Is that a good codec to download?

Vegas does not work well with Xvid or DivX so don’t bother trying to edit them directly. You’ll need to re-encode those files into something that Vegas can edit if you really want to edit them. You can get Xvid from xvid.org. You’ll still need a program to convert the files to DV or M-JPEG or Lagarith or some other codec that Vegas can edit. Lots of people use Super(c) to convert files. Google for it.

When you say that “Vegas does not work well with Xvid or DivX,” what exactly do you mean? Because I downloaded Xvid, and now all of my files are opening properly. Why would I need a converter like Super(c)?

Have you tried to render any of your projects? This is usually where Xvid and DivX get into trouble with Vegas; the renders have problems like jerky playback, green blocks and other artifacts, etc. Just make sure that you can render without problems.

Yes, exactly. That’s where people have trouble and converting the files seems to clear it up. Just do a test render and see so that you don’t get too far along and realize that it’s not working.
