New user, coupla questions re: Vegas / Architect
Hi all,
I’m a very recent convert to the Sony family, coming to it from Premiere Elements 7. I just put together my first project shot in 1080i HD but rendered to SD and found that when Premiere Elements downrez’d the source material to DVD resolution, it looked truly awful. So I tried the trial version of Vegus Studio Platinum 9 and DVD Architect Studio, liked them and bought them.
OK, that out of the way….. I have a couple questions about those two applications.
1. Is there any way in Vegas Studio to automatically create scene/chapter markers at clip boundaries? That would make assembling a quickie DVD much easier.
2. Same question for Architect Studio.
3. Can you only add one audio file to a “picture compilation”? I did a slide show as part of this project and my music bed was about 1/4 the length of the slide show. I ended up using a separate audio editor and making a music bed the same length as my slide show because I could not add multiple instances of the same music track.
4. What do the initial project presets affect (ie., interlacing, etc)? They seem to affect how the material is rendered, but do they affect anything during editing? Can I change them at will prior to rendering?
5. I’m a little unclear what my options are in Vegas Studio / Architect Studio when working in HD all the way to the edited output…. if I want to burn a BD disc, do I render to something Architect can understand like MPEG2, or do I render to something like h.264 and just burn that to a BD disc? I understand Architect cannot do BD menus….. can it do anything at all in HD?

There is no automated way in Movie Studio. In Vegas Pro you could use scripts but the Movie Studio version doesn’t have this so you have to manually drop a marker at the beginning of each event to make chapter points.

You have to manually create chapter points here as well unless you did this in Movie Studio already and rendered with embedded markers in which case they will automatically get imported from the markers in Movie Studio.

Sorry I never used picture compilation so i can’t answer this one. I do all of my photo montages in Vegas.

Actually they don’t affect the render. These settings are for how Vegas displays the footage while editing. It is a good idea to keep them the same as your render format so that there are no surprises when you render but you can have a 60i project and render to 24p if you’d like.

I don’t have the Movie Studio version but I do know that DVD Architect Studio cannot handle HD/Blu-ray. I believe your only options is to render a Blu-ray disc directly from the timeline with the menus option: Tools | Burn Disc | Blu-ray Disc… (I think Movie Studio has this option)

Bummer! What a silly function to omit. I can live with it, but it makes quickie “vacation video” projects more difficult.

Thanks, I missed that one. Yes, it looks like you can render to Bluray in either MP4 or MPEG2 including chapter markers in Vegas Studio….. just no menu.

Hmmmm….. turns out that I DO have one other question. Vegas Studio 9 will suit me just fine but it looks like DVD Architect 5 is what I REALLY want…. but you can’t buy it by itself? If so, that is a shame. I downloaded the trial version of DVDA 5 and it indeed does what I need. It can do HD Bluray menus where 4.5 cannot. But clicking the BUY link only offers to sell you Vegas Pro and that is unfortunately way more money than I want to throw at this.

Paul, Yes that is unfortunate and hopefully Sony will fix that in the next release. In the mean time, you might want to check out Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6 Plus with the Blu-ray plug-in. It’s not that expensive and has a nice collection of menu templates to choose from. I use to use it to make HD DVD’s before Blu-ray won the war so I haven’t tried the Blu-ray plug-in but the application itself is easy to use.

Thanks but I’m done buying software for now 😉 I came to Vegas because I discovered that my former editor (Adobe Premiere Elements 7) did a truly horrible job rendering HD to DVD. I like Vegas and would like to stick with it. I’ve even gotten comfortable with DVDA after a brief struggle 😉 I find it hard to believe that Sony would market Vegas Studio 9 with DVDA 4.5 when it is clearly aimed at HD users and says it will burn a BD disc but doesn’t specifically state that you can’t do menus. That is very close to false advertising. I can only hope that the next release is affordable to upgrade. Or better still, just allow an upgrade to a “Studio” version of DVDA 5.
In the mean time, Premiere Elements 7 seems to do an OK job with HD assets rendered to a BD disc so if I need to burn a BD with menus I can still go that route.
