  sony vegas movie studio platinum 7.0 – rendering size issue

  Hello,
  When I render a MPEG-2 DVD Arch. NTSC Widescreen video stream Studio aborts when the rendering mpeg file reaches the size: 4,194,108 KB. The video is not even 2 hours long. I know the movies I used to create my movie are render in 16:9, I may have recorded them in HD (not sure). This happened to me on another project, I had to split the movie into 2 DVDs. I can not split this one into 2 DVDs.

  How do I get around this bug or how do I render less HD? the movie i am rendering is 1 hour and 40 minutes and should fit on a single DVD.

  Sounds like your harddrive is formatted as FAT32, which has a file size limit of 4GB. Go to Windows Explorer, right-click the drive in question, and choose Properties. Next to File System, it will say either FAT32 or NTFS. If it says FAT32, you need to either reformat the drive (you will lose everything, so back it up first) as NTFS or convert it to NTFS (which usually goes okay without destroying any of your data, but it’s still a good idea to back things up…which almost defeats the purpose of converting instead of reformatting…oh well).

  If the drive is already formatted as NTFS, the plot thickens. At any rate, it’s not a “bug” in Vegas Movie Studio. Normally, it can create files over 4GB just fine.

  Thank you! The drive was a FAT32, when I changed to NTFS I was able to render the movie. Now, I have a new problem…even thought the movie length is less then 2 hours (around 1 hour and 40 minutes) the MPEG-2 Widescreen and the AC3 combine in DVD Arch says the movie is to large to fit on a DVD. Shouldn’t I be able to get atleast 2 hours on a standard DVD? When I render to MPEG-1 the file size is a little over 1M, while the same rendering to MPEG-2 Widescreen is 4,182,130 KB and the AC3 is 306,275 KB. Which I think should fit on 1 DVD, but won’t. What do I need to do to get the MPEG-2 size down?

  Not at normal 6Mbps quality. You only get about 1 hr 20 min.

  Lower the average bit rate below 6Mbps. Google for “bitrate calculator” and use one to see what you should set the MPEG-2 bitrate to for the length of your movie. 1hr 40 min would be around 4.6Mbps.
