  • Editing from USB flash drives

Posted by Tim Mccallister on July 23, 2009 at 1:06 am

I currently am editing off two USB 2.0 hard drives at home. I’d like to copy my audio and video files to two separate USB Flash drives, and take those with me to edit at a local coffee shop.

Are flash drives fast enough to do this?

Of course you can take tham with you on that medium.
Just first make sure you copy the files you are working
with to the laptop and not necessarily edit them
    directly from the flash drives.

Oh I should’ve been clearer, sorry.

I’d like to use the USB flash drives AS external hard drives, so as not to slow down my laptop’s single hard drive with running the project, the video files, and the audio files, all off the same drive at the same time.

So I’d prefer to use my system drive to run the project files, one Flash for video files, and one Flash for audio files. Can Vegas work on a laptop using this method?

You don’t say how large the files are but video is usually large as in Gigabytes per hour of footage.
USB Flash drives are expensive and without a lot of capacity.
You may want to consider a portable hard drive that runs off of USB2, that means no AC adapter.

I’d rather not carry around even a small little side drive.

The reason I ask about flash drives is, they are barely there, I think PNY makes some fast ones, and I’m editing mostly audio, the video files are not dailies but a rendered out movie. So I wanted to find a flash drive that could throughput audio files fast enough while I edit them across roughly 30 tracks to picture, without having an accessory hard drive to lug around…

I don’t know about the speed aspect, but just a thought you might research is to use SDHC drives. Transcend makes 32GB drives in a Class 6 now for about $100.00 each, and you can get 16GB drives for about half that (or, two for $100.00).

If you have a PCMCIA/PC card slot, you can also purchase an adapter for the PCMCIA card slot for about $30.00

It works great, so you could have two 16GB or 32GB drives; and if you are shooting AVCHD you can also use the media to record in any SDHC-based camcorder. 32GB x 2 ought to be big enough to hold decent-sized files.

Please let me know how it works.
