Would Adding Extra RAM Help This Issue?
Just started working with HD footage in Vegas Moveie Studio Platinum 7.
It’s HDV (not AVCHD) and for the most part handles okay. But I can’t preview transitions in the preview window – even on “draft” view…
The footage pauses during the transition and then skips to catch up after it’s complete. It’s very difficult to judge fades etc.
My specs are Pentium core 2 due (2.1mhz) with bog standard graphics card (Radeon x1600) and 2GB RAM. Would adding extra RAM / better graphics card help or are there other limitations that would negate this?

No. Vegas doesn’t take advantage of any graphics card processing and more RAM will not help either. HDV playback is CPU bound and a 2.1Ghz dual core is below Sony’s specs of 2.8GHz for working with HD. You can make a timeline selection around the transition and use Shift+B to perform a RAM preview if you want to see a particular transition at full frame rates.

Hi John.
Just for my own edification, would Cineform NeoScene help him?
Cineform lists its minimum specs as:
Min: Core 2 Duo 2GHz
Preferred: Core i7https://www.cineform.com/neoscene/requirements.php
It might be cheaper for him than purchasing a new machine.
Just a thought.

That depends on several things, one of them being that Neo Scene cost as much as his Vegas Movie Studio Platinum did! 😉
I didn’t catch the fact at first that he is using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 7 and the current version is 9. Back in the VMSP 7 days it didn’t handle HDV very well but Sony has been doing lots of things to improve on that. The first thing I would do is download the trial of VMSP 9 and see if it handles HDV any better. It probably will and that may be all he needs. If that doesn’t work and he can spring for another $99, I would download the trial of Neo Scene and see if his PC can handle CineForm any better. That would be my second choice.
The good news is that they both have trials so there is nothing to loose here.

I would actually consider getting Vegas Pro – so I can render straight to mp4 (my custom button is greyed out). I’ll try the trial version first though.
