  Vegas 9 crashing.

  Vegas 9 64bit keeps crashing.

  Message:
  I Have some sessions where it works for hours then it crashes and I can’t get it to reload with out crashing.

  I tried uninstalling and downloading it directly from the web site and I still have the same issue.

  You weren’t specific as to when or under what task Vegas is crashing.
  But still anyway, yes there are a few instability and bug issues that will have to be ironed out soon in updates.

  I had the exact same issues and I reported this to Sony. Problem though is that they want an exact repro. My project was too large but if you have a small repro you could send it to them. I also send them a complete call stack while ago but they claim they can only look into it with repro (not so sure these issues will be fixed anytime soon as I had same issues in v8).

  Here’s what you can try:
  – Options/Preferences/General: Disable ‘Enable no-recompress long-GOP rendering’ (Sony suggested that but never worked for me though)
  – Options/Preferences/Video: set max # of threads to 1 and restart Vegas. This might actually help in most cases
  – Use 8bit for pixel format in project properties (in case you use now 32bit)

  The other thing I found out that for me the 64bit version of Vegas 9 is very solid. If you are using now 32bit consider 64bit if that’s an option.

  Last if everything fails I do this:
  – Render as AVI / Sony YUV. This will create huge files so you need to have enough disk space. Once I get the AVI I use another renderer to render to final output (or try Vegas again)
  – If above still fails after a while render in pieces and use 2nd rendering phase to put pieces together in final rendering process

  I tried your suggestions and it still freezes in the same place, at a transition. I will try deleting the wipe and just use the standard fade. I am not rendering a huge file but the source material is huge. I am creating a trailer from many long clips. I am trying ti render to a wmv. I will try rendering the way you explained.

  v9 has been problematic for me with freezes and crashes on two 32bit systems, 1 Vista and 1 XP. A colleagues facility which has three systems, 1 x 64bit Vista and 2 x 32bit XP has had similar experiences. The problems have been bad enough that both of us have gone back to 8.0c. Hope Sony resolve this pretty quickly because we need the EX codec asap.

  For me WMVHD never worked well with 8.0c either. I reported this to Sony but they claimed they never could repro.
  I decided not to use the WMVHD codec since it doesn’t support 1080i and for 720p the downscale quality was inferior to Tmpgenc.
  So I output first as Sony YUV and then use another renderer.

  Yesterday I suddenly ran into an issue that the rendered Sony YUV avi files could not played back/imported. So I’m right now 100% stuck. I reimaged the system to no avail. I filed another support case at Sony but not sure if that will help.

  Re WMVHD renders I find far and away the best thing for rendering these is Microsoft’s own Windows Media Encoder 9. Just throw your Vegas AVIs at it and get good quality output. It has heaps of encode profiles and a much wider range of fixed and variable bitrate, single pass, two pass, frame size, interlace de-interlace options etc to choose from. Profiles for streaming, downloading and so on, SD and HD. Good flexible ‘custom’ profiles if you want to create your own which you can export/re-import and save. Leaves any other WMV encoder for dead in my experience. Best of all it’s free. If you had to buy a piece of software like this it would cost you some serious $$$ no doubt. Worth a try out. Just make sure you download the correct version as there are 32 and 64 bit versions.
