  Widescreen problem

  I have a Hard Disk Camcorder which can record in PAL 16:9 format.

  When I play the recorded media files (.mpg) in a mediaplayer, they are shown in 720×576 resolution. But when I try to make a movie, and render the clips to one single file with Sony Vegas Pro 8.0, the picture seems to be too long vertically and there are black spaces both to the right and left. It’s like the 16:9 file has been squeezed into 4:3 format. I’ve tried a lot of adjustments to make the black unused areas at the sides to go away (even to crop the videofile to be more like widescreen!) but can’t make it happen. I have also tried different templates like PAL DV WIDESCREEN…
  What have I missed?

  Make sure that Vegas is interpreting the files correctly. Right-click on one of the events and select Properties. Then go to the Media tab and make sure the Pixel aspect ratio is 1.45568 (PAL DV Widescreen).
