I have a Canon HV30 and I just got the HF200 (with flash memory), but any footage I import into my Vegas Pro 8.0 from the HF200 is super slow and laggy on the preview. If I render it and put it back in, blayback is fine, but I want the unrendered footage to preview well.

I don’t think the computer is the problem because my HV30 footage previews fine. Is there some setting on Vegas that can remedy this? Any suggestions?!

What format are you rendering it to?

That’s not entirely true. You are comparing two different HD formats (HDV vs AVCHD) that have very different hardware requirements. The Canon HV30 shoots HDV MPEG2 which can play back a lot smoother on moderate computers than the footage from the HF200 which shoots AVCHD MPEG4. Unless you have a new QuadCore computer, don’t expect AVCHD playback to be smooth at all.

I’ve also noticed that previews of HDV (I assume the same will be true of AVCHD) clips in, say, an explorer window are much laggier than the same clip imported into a project and previewed from the timeline. For HDV (on a year-old QuadCore system) there is significant loss of framerate and/or sharpness in preview either way. But it can get a little scary looking when previewed directly from an m2ts file captured from camera (Canon XLH1) to the hard drive.
