DVD Quality issues…
Hi all, i am totally new to this, so please forgive me if i am asking some basic questions and my long query.
A few weeks, ago, i bought a new Sony Handycam for a wedding. I also installed the Sony Picture Motion Browser, (PMB), and also bought Vegas Movie Studio Platnium 9.0 and DVD Architect Pro 5.0.
After uploading my movies from my Handycam to my PC, using the PMB software, i burnt this to a DVD, using the PMB software. (The movies are MPG’s).
The quality was excellent and really happy with the DVD.Recently, i thought about editing the movie files i shot, and wanted to add some music over some of the video.
I then edited the video in Vegas Movie Studio after reading some tutorials, and it all looks really good in the preview box. The music and the picture quality are both excellent in the Movie Studio preview box. I added some MP3 music files to the edit, and split/cut some of the video up to make it look better.
When i then click on “make DVD” in Vegas Movie Studio, it tells me to open the file in DVD Architect.
So i go ahead and open DVD Architect, and start a new project, (single movie), with the project video format set to MPEG 2 (PAL), and audio to AC-3 stereo.
I then click on “make dvd” in Architect, and straight to Burn, and click “next” to the next few screens, until i get to the last burn screen, and click finish. It then starts to burn.
After burning, i then put the DVD disc into my (Sony) player, and the quality is quite bad. It is quite patchy at times and sometimes there are “lines” at the top and bottom of the screen. The colour is also quite poor. I have even tried the DVD in my PC and it is also quite poor. The sound however is excellent, so no problems with that. Just picture quality.
I am also quite surprised that the resoloution of the video is quite small/poor, (at 720×576), although i think this may be a setting in my Sony Handycam and i guess i will have to change this setting in the camera itself for next time.
Can anyone let me know what i may have done wrong? I am burning onto Verbatim DVD+R’s discs, using a LiteON DVD recorder.

There will be some quality loss when re-rendering MPEG2 files but it shouldn’t be that noticeable with just one generation, especially if you liked the output direct to DVD.
Did you select the correct project properties in Vegas Movie Studio? I see that you are in a PAL country but Vegas Movie Studio defaults to NTSC unless you change it. If you are editing PAL video on an NTSC timeline and then render back out to PAL this could be why there is so much loss. Make sure your footage, project, and render properties all match to get the best quality.
