importing video files
I recently purchased Vegas Movie Studio Platinum and whenever I drag files from project media to the timeline, I get no video, only audio. I was using vlc media player as default, which was .avi files, which didn’t work…then, I even set my default to Vegas Movie Studio and still no video
The pictures of a still frame in the video that usually accompany the file in the project media folder are blank, so I converted a file to windows media player format. Unlike the vlc/vegas files, I was able to drag the video from project media to video or video overlay; but in this case the spot where the video should be was red and said that the video is offline.
Any suggestions?

Download a program called g-spot and drag the avi file over the “g-spot” on your desktop once you get it installed. It will tell you what codec is used for the file.
Avi is just a wrapper. Anything can be in that wrapper. Kind of like at Halloween- you get all kinds of candy and some don’t have names on the wrapper so anything could be in them. Avi works the same way. It is just the casing the video comes in. What you need to find out is what is in the wrapper and then you will need the video for windows codec that will allow you to see it within Vegas.

I downloaded gspot221.exe. When I drag and drop avi. files its says the codec is not installed; even when I click render, there is always a partial failure and says some streams are in an unsupported format. Is there something I am missing?

Yes. You will need to find the codec that gspot said was unsupported in a video for windows flavor and install it if you want to work with it in Vegas.
Once you have the name of the codec then you should be able to edit it if you can find it. Gspot should give you the name.
