I really really can’t get my youtubes to look good

I have tried everything. I feel like there must be a secret no one is telling me.

On my last attempt, I used the recommended settings – MP4, 720×480 (the size of the source video), CBR 10Mbps.

the resulting video is huge – for only ~3 minutes it’s over 200MB but I waited in anticipation while it uploaded. unfortunately it looks like crap in regular mode. it does look good when I click the HQ button, but that is not the default and I want it to look good by default. I’ve seen TONS of videos out on youtube that look great on the default settings. what am i missing? what’s the big secret?

Hi Gary

There’s been literally hundreds of threads on encoding for You Tube. Do a search of the forum for the most recent ones because You Tube recently changed the way it encodes.

Also on Vasst’s site there’s a ste-by-step tutorial for You Tube. You can also search the videos on YT you’ll find some good recent video tutorials.

Atually your MP4 doesn’t look all that bad. Why did you encode for WMV as well? All you needed to do was upload the MP4.

A handheld shot is never going to look good because the constant motion will cause a lot of compression.

I’ll say the problem is that you used autofocus, as the front of the nest is in focus, the bird and backgroud is out of focus.

Try “Unsharpen mask”, something like radius 0,06 & amount 0,3

If Youtube failes, it’s because sometimes the limit is 100MB/video.

Use 1280×720, then Youtube will upload as HD.

YouTube’s Handbook says…

Best Formats for Uploading

YouTube can accept almost any video format for upload, but for most users we have found the following settings give the best results.

* Video Format: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred
* Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9)
* Resolution: 640×360 (16:9) or 480×360 (4:3) recommended
* Audio Format: MP3 or AAC preferred
* Frames per second: 30
* Maximum length: 10 minutes (we recommend 2-3 minutes)
* Maximum file size: 1 GB

I found that uploading SD video in larger formats than recommended results in a long period of waiting while the video is being “processed.” I think it is being resized to 480×360. When I uploaded a video in the recommended size, it was immediately available and looked better than the same video uploaded in a larger format. So perhaps you want to try 640×360 with your HD videos (depending on what YouTube calls “HD”).

YouTube HD is heading to 1280 x 720, and ideally, that’s the best size at which to upload. This means that as videos are converted in the future, they’ll be at full rez.
There is a detailed tutorial on the VASST.com page about this very subject, including how to embed code to force the higher quality playback.

Youtube’s own turtorial:

Resolution Recommended: 1280 x 720 (16×9 HD) and 640 x 480 (4:3 SD)
There is no required minimum resolution – in general the higher resolution the better and HD resolution is preferred. For older content, lower resolution is unavoidable.

Bit rate Because bit-rate is highly dependent on codec there is no recommended or minimum value. Videos should be optimized for resolution, aspect ratio and frame rate rather than bit rate.

Frame rate The frame rate of the original video should be maintained without re-sampling. In particular pulldown and other frame rate re-sampling techniques are strongly discouraged.

Codec H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred.

So YouTube keeps the uploaded video AND converts it to their current standard? Who’d have thunk it!

Where is the tutorial that specifies 1280×720? I only saw the pop-up on their upload page. I’m new to uploading on YouTube and want to learn more.
