properly encoding vids into mp4 format for mp3 players
ok i have all sorts of vids in my pc. i have avi, mpeg2, wmv, and even mp4.
now i just recently got a new mp3 sony player. the 16 gb kind. i have no problem dragging and dropping music and jpegs onto the folder into the mp3 player. but when i drop a vid and a mp4 vid, when i play it on the mp3 player, it says unsupported file.
i don’t get it. the mp3 player said it can play mp4 vids. i’m using vegas 8 to render the vids to mp4 but i think i have it all set wrong. what is the proper setting so the vid will be read on the mp3 player?

This is the “little white lie” of media players. They all support MP4 but there are so many parameters to the MP4 spec that what they don’t tell you is that they only support a very limited sub-set of MP4 rendered in a certain way. An MP4 file that plays on an iPod may not play on a PSP or Zune and visa versa. What you have to do is find out what format your media player supports and re-encode your videos to that format. Not fun, I’ve been there.
Since it’s a Sony player, I would start by rendering using the Tools | Export to PSP option. Hopefully all Sony players will support the Sony PSP format (but maybe not). If that doesn’t work try the iPod format (Main Concept AVC/AAC | Apple iPod 320×240 Video). Be prepare to waste an entire weekend figuring this out. Good luck.
