I have googled around but no one has a solution.

    My problem is 2 fold.

    1. When dealing with large MPEG2 files Vegas chops a lot of data out of it and this is then displayed as a large red or green area (on the timeline) where the missing data is. if there are many of these mpeg2 files, vegas will crash.

I got out of this by never using normal stream mpeg2 or VOB inside vegas, instead, I now use the Transport stream for MPEG2. I copy my mpeg2 direct from DVD using anydvd and VideoRedo.

    2. The second problem arises when using the transport container mainly. When the audio of the mpeg2 is AC3, vegas gives this error (and closes):

    Sony Vegas Pro 8.0
    Version 8.0c (Build 260)
    Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) WRITE:0x5160000 IP:0x24A02BE1
    In Module ‘mcdddec.dll’ at Address 0x24A00000 + 0x2BE1
    Thread: Audio5Reader ID=0x850 Stack=0x485F000-0x4860000

I have traced this dll as the main issue. It is the ac3 decoder. If I delete the dll from the folder, the wave will obviously not be used in the editor but the video loads just fine. Therefore this is a specific problem with AC3 especially when using the transport container for MPEG2. I did not get this issue with 8.0a (if I remember right)

I know people often say “well mpeg2 isn’t editing friendly”, but the transport method has been a big help and has eliminated all bugs I had. Now the main issue is AC3 decoder problems.

The only way I have been able to solve all issues is to use a transport stream mpeg2 and convert the ac3 to Mpeg audio using videoredo. But I have quite a few clips especially 5 HUGE mpeg2 files. (have a look here in HD mode> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYWYuNti6Uo&fmt=22

Vegas does not like mpeg2 at all. Even Transport streams have issues at times with garbled frames. Someone needs to look at mpeg2 and ac3 in vegas because there are major issues here

Any help appreciated. Now to report a bug with videoredo…..

Are you absolutely certain you have previously imported AC-3 into Vegas?

Vegas does not like mpeg2 at all.” Really? News to me . .

“Someone needs to look at mpeg2 and ac3 in vegas because there are major issues here” Not sure I’d call it a “major issue”? Again, if you go to Project Media and click on the Import Media Icon, do you see an option to import AC-3? – I don’t?

I think the alternative way of looking at this that MPEG2 may/can contain Audio or not. I have imported MPEG2 files that HAVE an audio strem included within the file, and I have imported MPEG2s that DON’T have audio as part of their file. But I can not import an AC-3? I wouldn’t call this a bug though?

If I am correct then it is more likely that Vegas doesn’t have the licencing to import AC-3.

You are correct that Sony has made a conscious effort NOT to import AC3. Early on this was because there was no reason to import AC3 unless you were pirating DVD’s. Then Sony DVD cameras started shooting AC3 and so they had to allow it but they only do it under the Import Camcorder Disc option. Now it seems strange that one way it works and another way it doesn’t. I don’t think it’s a licensing issue. It’s just where we are with Vegas.

iT DOES have the license and it DOES allow the importing of ac3. Ac3 has no problems in 8.0a and it had no problems with program streamed mpeg2. It DOES have a problem with transport sream mpeg2.

Please do not take me for a fool.

OK, then why can’t I see an AC-3 as being an import option?

I don’t know why you can’t but ig you look at the error message I supplied you will see the dll that is used. It is an ac3 decoder. It says so itself.

More over, I CAN import ace mpeg2 if it is the program stream. it is only the transport stream that is affected by the bug. Unfortunately program stream mpeg 2 video is very buggy and prone to garbaled frames and crashes.

You have obviously never loaded a 5 minute mpeg2 file into vegas or 50 Mpeg 2 files or you would know I am right.
