Matrox video card for preview output
Hi!
I’m trying to set up an external monitor for preview. Have searched forum and found a lot of posts concerning monitoring issues, but have not found any answer to my issue.
I have a Matrox Parhelia videocard that gives me three outputs simultaniously. Two computer monitors and one S-video output. My problem is that Vegas (Pro 8.0c) do not recognize the S-video output. The options I find is: “Windows secondary display” which is selectable and two options that are not connected: “OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV” and “AJA Video Device”. The firewire can be used as long as it is not HD I guess, but I would like to monitor the video on a small HD TV.
I used to edit on Avid Xpress Pro with this videocard and utilized the three individual outputs. That software is now outdated and allegable for upgrade to Mediacomposer. Upgrading would mean new hardware and as I am moving over to Mac and Final Cut eventually (when I can afford it) it would be a too big investment. Bought a Vegas lisence for temporary use. Have an XDCam EX-1 camera that I record on. This was not too relevant to the issue at hand, but serves as an explanation to my current status.
Back to the topic. Does the videocard have to be AJA for it to work with Vegas? Bying such an expencive videocard for monitoring only seems a bit overkill.

Vegas will also use the Windows Secondary Display in a dual display system. You would need to set up your video card to make the S-Video look like a secondary monitor to Windows. I don’t know if that’s possible with your card or not. You may not get the output you expect however. You can also use use the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV option for SD if you have a digital to analog converter like the Canopus ADVC-110/300 or ADS Tech Pyro A/V Link.

Hi Tor, I have that same Matrox card and with 3 dispays, it’s setup as all three as one desktop or 2 as desktop and one as secondary.The later will allow you to use the secondary as full screen preview. Vegas wont see the HD output like Avid Media Composer so I drag my preview window to one of the 3 desktop screens and strech it to fill the monitor. I havent used the S video out so I don’t know how that looks. I dought it will look anything like if you send out IEEE-1394 and use a camera to comvert it to composite. Hope this helps,

My current setting is “2 displays, Independent mode + 1 feature display”. Vegas only see the two regular computer monitors though. I hoped there was a way to make Vegas output to the third monitor, but it seems as I have to live with the two for now.

Oh i see what you want to do but I can’t find a display setup that uses 3 computer monitors except for the triple head desktop mode, all 3 three as one desktop. But you can tear the video preview window from the dock to the 3rd monitor and stretch it to full screen. The video display is the same size as what you want. My current setup is 2 displays independent mode + 1 feature (HDTV). Vegas doesn’t see the HDTV but many other programs do, including Windows media player. One little downfall with this mode is the HDTV does overscan just a little. Danny Hays

I have the same setup as you. Two computer monitors and one HD TV. As you point out, many other programs recognize this TV, even Avid and some other video player programs, but not Vegas. Too bad…

So you know you can use one computer monitor and one HDTV right? If you have a DVI or VGA input on your HDTV, Windows sees the HDTV as a second display and Vegas will too. If your set on seeing the video on the HDTV from Vegas, this is your only way I’m afraid. Also when I use the Matrox card it disables the onboard video card unfortunatly. So it probably wont let you install another display card and have windows see it. Danny I still love the card. :))
