  render HD to DVD std – strectch or pan aspect-ratio ??

  I’m working with EX3 1920 x 1080 mxf files to make SD DVDs and have always known there is a small difference on the final wide rectangle between HD and SD-wide… when I make a render always “mark” the “stretch video to fill output frame” in order to get rid of the “small” pilar-boxes on left and right sides of the screen (which are evident if you work your HD files on a SD-wide timeline)…. then I have the idea to just “match aspect ratio” (pan-crop tool) on all my clips and forget about the “stretch” option…. so far I have the following conclusions:

  1.- the “stretch” option doesn´t seem to work, at least testing the mpg rendered, I can see the (very little) pilar-boxes on the sides… is this a bug ? (OK, just a few pixels but it IS supossed to work, am I doing something wrong ?)
  2.- the “match aspect” seems to work best.. the 1920 x 1080 rectangles are “cropped” to 1920 x 1056 on my SD timeline and NO pilar boxing on the final render …. and I know I can pan-crop further (down to 480) in my SD timeline

  any comments about the issue would be greatly apreciated….

  …making further tests:

  – the “stretch” mark option works as expected (NO pilar boxing) only on an HD timeline (not on a SD timeline working with HD)…..

  so maybe is best to work on an original HD timeline knowing that the final output will be whatever you want ….

  however, if the final video will be “stretched” (OK just a few pixels) maybe it will be “deformed” (nobody will tell you that) vs. the “cropped” version worked on the SD timeline… am I right ??

  still waiting comments about this…. (I don´t know premiere or FCP handles this very “little” issue…)

  That’s correct. This is because once you place HD media on an SD timeline it is already conformed to SD resolution so there is no stretching. The black bars are in the video. This is why you have to use the stretch option from an HD timeline.

  Yes, an alternate solution is to drop the HD project into an SD timeline as a nested project and then use Pan/Crop on the one big event to Match Output Aspect. This will crop the whole project instead of stretching.
