  • Snapshots of video file not the right size in vegas?

    Hi

i’m having a problem with vegas, i am taking snapshots of video and putting them back into the video project timeline.. but the problem is that they are the wrong size, they come out rendered bigger than the video file so when it gets to the point of the video with pictures you can see the video get bigger. I tried making the saved images the same size as the video by changing the resolution but that doesn’t help either.. you can just see the black bars more on top & on the bottom.

how do i make the snapshots of the video exactly the same size as the video they were taken from? because i have tried cropping in vegas also.

I cant figure it out but it is obviously possible, i mean i dont remember having this problem in windows movie maker at least.

    Thanks

How are you taking the snapshots? You should be setting your video preview to Best (Full) and then use the snapshot button. That should produce the correct size.

Sounds like a pixel aspect ratio issue.

Computers use square pixels. (They’re not exactly square, but very, very close.) Most video formats use rectangular pixels — the pixels themselves are either wider than they are tall or taller than they are wide. This is why both standard NTSC DV and widescreen NTSC DV actually have the exact same dimentions (720 pixels by 480 pixels); the difference is in the size and shape of the pixels themselves.

Getting back to your snapshots: For some reason, Vegas saves snapshots differently whether you use the Copy to Clipboard option or the Save Snapshot to File option. Using the former, a snapshot copied from a 720×480 video is going to be 720×480. Using the latter, a snapshot saved to file from that same 720×480 video is going to be 655×480.

    Solutions:

    1. Use the method that gives you the size you want. If that method is the Copy to Clipboard one, then you’ll need to use a graphics app like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or even MS Paint (I think it can save to PNG these days?), paste the image there, and save to a new file.

    2. Use the other method and use a graphics app to resize your image. Just be sure to turn OFF that program’s “Retain Aspect Ratio” option.

    3. Just put the image back into your Vegas project, right-click it, and go to Switches > Maintain Aspect Ratio (uncheck it).

    Hi

I have tried resizing images in windows paint & in photoshop with the exact resolution of the video.

it looks ok in the preview window but when rendered it comes out wider on the parts that show the images.

if i import a non edited snapshot taken with the Best (Full) option, it comes out with bigger black bars at the top and bottom than the original video.

I have also tried unchecking the maintain aspect ratio.

Could somebody else test this and you will see what i mean.. i am stuck

I think i might have found a solution, the only problem is that it upscales the original video.. but they appear both the same size when rendered

Check the option Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox) before rendering and uncheck maintain aspect ratio on the image.

is this the only way around it? maybe somebody can give it a go with any video file.

Thanks for the tips, looking forward to more replies.

Edit: i think it could be to do with the project settings, the project is set to 720 x 480 (default?) the video is 528 x 384 and the images taken by snapshot are 720 x 480, now if i set the project to the resolution of the video and retook the snapshots perhaps then the video and images both be the same size when rendered.

But what i still do not understand is when i resize the images taken by snapshot and import them into the timeline with video, why are they still not the same size as eachother even after rendering?. it should not matter that the project is set to 720 x 480 because the image & video are set to the same size.

I had a problem with the size of a still image until I realized that it was snapped before I’d adjusted the project size.

Try deleting the still that you have, make sure the project size is set properly, then snap it again and bring it into the timeline. I don’t believe the preview size affects it, but I’m new at this and could be wrong.

A couple things to try…or know about when working with various formats on the timeline.

When you right-click the image on the timeline and go its properties, there is a Media tab where you can adjust the Pixel Aspect Ratio. There is a frustrating thing that editors have to deal with, the difference between square and rectangular pixels. It has to do with how video developed historically and is worth googling. But I usually have to adjust my 720×480 PNG files to 0.9091(NTSC DV) since it is set to 1.000(square) by default.

Also, if your video is smaller than the project settings, you may try to open up the Event Pan/Crop settings for each segment and right-click–>Match Output Aspect. This will resize the video to the appropriate size (and it may crop it to fit the output size as well).

Either way, you have a few things to play with.

“Also, if your video is smaller than the project settings, you may try to open up the Event Pan/Crop settings for each segment and right-click–>Match Output Aspect. This will resize the video to the appropriate size (and it may crop it to fit the output size as well).”

Ditto what Naiche says here. You probably want to either define the project to match the actual specs of the source video, or use Naiche’s suggestion here (that would be my choice if you’ve already done a lot of work in the project as it’s presently defined) — the “Match Aspect” and “Match Source” buttons are lifesavers when it comes to working with mixed aspect ratio originals and whatnot. And I hate to admit how long I worked with Vegas before realizing they existed, and doing all sorts or labor intensive nastiness to get the results I wanted, or anything remotely close to what I wanted. 😉

If this is not actually responsive to what you’re seeing and struggling with, maybe some screen caps uploaded for us to look at would benefit everyone by focusing us on exactly what could be happening in your case?
