What is a common workflow used to combine after effects graphics/titling/effects with
    NLE work done in vegas?

Do most lock picture in vegas and then import in AE or import separate clips into AE for affects and picture lock?

    or

Do all AE work first and edit in vegas?

    Thanks,
    Thayer

I would imagine everyone’s workflow is a little different and you may change your workflow depending on the project but usually I will work in Vegas and then export media as needed to work in AE and then bring the results back into Vegas.

If I’m using AE for an opening, then I may create the whole thing in AE or I may create an overlay in AE and render as a Quicktime Animation file (because it supports an alpha channel) and then I’ll just use those assets in Vegas as needed. Clearly for anything that involves motion tracking in the middle of a project and such I will do the former and export from Vegas, work in AE, and render back out as needed.

As John said it varies with the particular project you are
working on and an individuals preferred work-flow…for me,
I most often however create my visual effects sequences first
in after effects, export using the quicktime format and then
bring everything into Vegas for finishing.

    Hi,

I was also looking for the same information. Thank you for the info. It would be much appreciated if you could explain the workflow a little more.

Suppose I have a HDV (M2T) clip. I want to do color corrections, special effects or film look in AE and edit in Vegas. What conversions should I make. What should be my best workflow.

    Thanks in advance,
    Sameer

Color corrections, special effects, and film look are very different things. I would do all of my editing in Vegas first and then render a final version for color correcting or film looks in AE. That is unless you have a two camera shoot and need to color correct one camera which I would do first before editing. Special effects would be handled as needed depending on the FX. Usually I would render a section of the project in Vegas, add the FX in AE, then overlay the FX for that section back in Vegas on a higher track so that the original events are still there on the lower track in case I need to change them later.

    Dear John,

Thanks for the tip. It has cleared some of my doubts.

Which is the best format/settings to use when you render from Vegas to work in AE? And also the best settings used when you render after applying effects.

    Regards,
    Sameer

I use CineForm to render out of Vegas and back from AE unless I need transparency when coming back from AE in which case I will use Quicktime with the Animation codec.
