Vegas 9.0 Fatal Error when attempting to import MPG
Hi there, I have spent hours looking through threads and found similar issues and have attempted so resolve as per the respective suggestions to no avail.
Background
My Father in law has posted me some MPG files on a external hard disk. Which he filmed on a Sony HDR-SR12.Initially I was not able to view these files through Windows Media Player as I did not have the correct codec. I downloaded an XP Codec pack from https://www.free-codecs.com/ and I am now able to view these files in Media Player.
I am running Vegas Pro 9.0b (build 66) through Windows XP Pro.
Issue
When I attempt to drag one of the MPG files from my father in laws camera into movie studio i receive the a fatal error “An error occured during the current operation” “An exception has occured” The application is then terminated.I have no problems importing any other MPG files.
I suspect there is a linguering problem with the Codec although I’m lost as to how I can resolve.

I’ve got a Sony CX12 (which is the essentially the same camera without the hard drive) and the MPG files drop into Vegas without any additional codecs or problems. Perhaps the files are corrupt in some way? Did you just drag them off of the camera HDD? (that’s what I do with the memory stick) Are you sure the are MPG (standard DVD MPEG-2) and not AVCHD renamed? The camera shoots both.

I dragged the MPG files directly off the Camera and we haven’t modified them in any way,
I’m not sure what setting he has used to shoot these files, do both produce MPG files? the MPG files appear to be very high resolution and quality if that gives any clues. Some are certainly very large in size for a small amount of footage. (I have dragged larger MPG files on to the timeline with no problems)
I’m wondering if the software that the Camera comes with contains any drivers that I need or additional product specific codecs that I can’t download. I don’t have the software and can’t find anywhere to download it..

The DVD MPEG-2 files have an extension of .mpg and they can be recorded at 9Mbps, 6Mbps or 4MBps. The AVCHD files have an .mts extensions and they are recorded at 16Mbps, 9Mbps, 7Mbps, & 5Mbps. One format is MPEG-2 and the other is MPEG-4. Neither need any drivers or anything to be played back in Vegas as long as your version of Vegas supports AVCHD.
Unless your Father-in-law specifically placed the camera in SD: MPEG mode, it defaults to shooting HD: AVCHD. Not many people buy an HD camera just to shoot SD. Are you sure they are MPEG files?
The confusing part is that you said:

Which is impossible since Vegas Pro 9 doesn’t exist! I assume you are using Movie Studio 9 and you need to have the Platinum Edition in order for AVCHD to be recognized. So please check you exact version of Movie Studio.

Hey thanks John, I must have jumbled up my thoughts when I was writing down the version of Vegas I was using and thinking about XP pro at the same time. My Apologies.
The files are definately MPG files they all have extension *.MPG, he did say though that he flicked over some setting on his camera, can’t remember what or why though.
I’m downloading a trial version of platinum edition at the moment, hopefully this fixes the problem. I’ll let you know tonight (after work)

Thanks for all your help John, the MPG files work fine with Vegas Platinum. These files have 5.1 surround sound, I wonder if this is why they didn’t work in the standard edition.

This is absolutely why. A quick check of the Vegas Family Comparison chart on the Sony site clearly shows that Movie Studio does not support 5.1 Surround until you move up to the Platinum version.
BTW, that camera also records in stereo so tell your father-in-law that he can adjust the audio to be stereo if he wants to be compatible with Movie Studio. (not sure why he’s shooting only SD with an HD camera anyway)
