    Hi all,

I’ve been working on trying to recreate a couple effects seen on Saving Private Ryan.

    1. Ive been messing around with all the color effects, and though I know the possibilities are endless as far as color goes , it can be a bit confusing. I’m just not getting it right. Any ideas of how to accomplish the overall color of the film?

    2. I also noticed, during the battle at the beginning of the film, it had a choppy look. Not sure if its a fps thing or what. Is it possible to recreate that with miniDV footage?

    Thanx for reading,

It’s called the “Bleach By-Pass” look (google it for a lot of hits on how this was done) and can be accomplished in several different ways.
If you have After Effects, there’s a tutorial on the Cow called Simple Bleach Bypass that shows you how to do it.
If you have Vegas 7 (the Pro version), then you have a light version of Magic Bullet Movie Looks and this may be a preset.
Otherwise, add the Color Corrector, lower saturation (e.g. 0.5) and/or add a s-shaped color curve.

For the “choppy” (i.e. strobing) look, try changing the Undersample rate of the video clip.
This is done by right-clicking the video clip, selecting Properties and then lowering the Undersample rate.
Start with a value of 0.5 and then adjust lower or higher as desired.

Some of the more subjective footage on the landing was shot with the shutter and pull-down claw purposefully placed out of perfect alignment. As a result, the negative was pulled down before the shutter was completely closed, causing a partial blur of the image.

It might be possible to accomplish something like this effect in video by the following: duplicate the video. Unlick, “enable snapping.” On the upper line, shift the image a tiny bit to the right, and slide the “Level” slider to the left until the combined images please you. Not sure if this will work, but worth a try.

Combining the above with the methods previously described of bleach bypass and a more choppy look may get you somewhat close to the Private Ryan landing look. If you do that, please post a link where others can see the results.
