Vegas 8.1, what CPU and video output for YouTube HD?
I’m currently on a P4 2.8Ghz, 1024KB cache, 800Nhz with dual channel 4GB ECC DDR2 553Hz memory and running SATA2 drives. Running Vista 32-bit.
My end video product is basically 2 – 8 minute YouTube HD Videos.
I’ve done a few basic tests and not sure if I could really benefit from a faster processor, or not. I actually have 3 identical machines (old servers from old biz) so I can make one machine a dedicated Vegas box, or I could just upgrade my main machine. Although it’s to me is a fairly snappy machine.
The other issue is I’m using the default output and a 2 minute video is over 500MB in size. If my main audiance is going to be YouTube HD, is there a format that would be best for this that would make a smaller video, or is this going to be the average size for decent quality full frame video?

Youtube is funny because they apparently show their “Watch in HD” videos at around 480p. However if you upload a 480p video to them, they’ll just downscale it and won’t give you the “Watch in HD” option at all. You need to upload a 720p video in order to get that 480p feed. It sounds crazy but the general internet viewer probably doesn’t care one way or another. But to answer your question, I’ve had success just rendering a 720p WMV from Vegas and uploading that. It’ll be a lot smaller (in filesize) than the video you’ve been rendering.
As for cpu’s if you’re actually editing HD footage and don’t want to spend a lot I would definitely consider getting something with an Intel E8400 or Q6600. I’ve built pc’s with the E8400 both at home and at work and it’s great… for now 😛

I guess I’m not actually recording true HD. Our camera is fairly cheap – Canon ZR40. It has a fake HD setting or something 16:9. I was eyeing the Canon XH-A1 as something to get once we got going. I guess my feeling is HD is the fut.. present so I thought I should just focus on that.
