Vegas and Archictect ????’s
hi guys im new to the site and also to the world of video editing. i have a problem. i videoed a event for my cousin and after i put it in vegas and edited out uneccesary video and stripped it down to what was needed. i rendered it as a mpeg1 and the file size is 2.09 gb and the playing time is 2:34:20 and im wondering if there is a way to get it all onto 1 dvd without comprimising the dvd quality much? im using sony dvd architect and it says its like 9.7 gb when i put it in architecht.

Render it as MPG2 for DVD. A DVD will handle about 72 minutes of video and after that you have to start lowering the bit rate & quality of picture. I never use dual layer DVDs and if necessary I create 2 DVDs. There are a lot of other factors that impact the final size of the mpg2 file. What did you shoot and did you use a tripod? Is there a lot of action/movement in your video? You need to use a bit rate calculator to determine the render settings.

78 min DVD may give a bitrate of 9300000 – 7400000 – 2950000, 2-pass.

I typically do a constant bit rate. I go from between 8,000,000 – 8,800,000. The only time I consider a variable rate is if I need to have more video on a single DVD. Otherwise I feel the constant bit rate is the only way to go.

a couple of issues with your approach:
1)[Jeremy Ulrich] “i rendered it as a mpeg1 and the file size is 2.09 gb”MPEG-1 is VCD quality, so you would normally not want to use it. Also, it explains why DVD-A expands your file to 9 GB, as DVDs use MPEG-2. You could try to make a VCD, but the video quality is very bad.

The only way to get 2 hrs (not even 2 1/2 hrs) in any decent quality is to use DVD-/+DL (Dual layer DVDs). However, 2 1/2 hours of an event is a lot to watch, so unless you are making a record of everything at the event, you may prefer to edit out even more of the video to get either 1 hr (single layer DVD) or 2 hrs (DVD DL). Alternaively, you could redited your files into 3 seperate sections, 1 each on a DVD
