  importing AVCHD (*.m2ts) files in Vegas 8.0 Pro

  I am having trouble importing *m2ts files into Vegas 8.0 Pro. They play fine in Sony’s Motion Picture Browser software (supplied with my Sony HDR-SR12 camera.) Vegas will not even recognize these files. Any ideas?

  On Sony’s Vegas support site I found the below description for how to do this. The problem I have is that this says I should see *.mpg files inside the camcorder. I don’t. Rather I see *.m2ts and *.mts files.

  How do I capture video from a Sony HDD camcorder?
  Answer

  Your hard disk camcorder is much different than a traditional camcorder in that you do not capture video with these devices in Sony Media Software applications. Instead, you move files from the hard disk camera to the local hard drive.

  1. Connect the camcorder to the computer via USB cable

  2. On the camcorder viewfinder, select “HDD”. In a few seconds, a Removable Disk window will pop up on your computer screen. Select “Take No Action” to close it.

  3. Left-click into My Computer and look for Removable Disk icon. Left-click into it and look for MP_ROOT. Left-click into the folder labeled 100PNV01 (you will see this if you are using the Sony DCR SR100; other models might have a slightly different folder name).

  4. You will see MPG files. These are the video files that you shot. Copy and paste these files to your local drive. Now the files are on your computer.

  5. Click “End” on the camcorder viewfinder and disconnect the camcorder from the computer.

  6. Open Vegas, Vegas Movie Studio, or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. Go to the Explorer tab at the bottom of the software and navigate to the folder on your local drive that contains the MPEG files. Once you arrive at this folder, you can left-click and drag the files to the timeline.

  Neal,

  I’m using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8, and have recently purchased a Sony SR12 camera. After copying the video files to my hard drive with the Motion Picture Browser, I simply navigate using Windows Explorer to the folder where my m2ts files are. I then drag them onto the Vegas timeline. I have never had any difficulty in doing this.

  I’m not sure if this helps at all, but at least you know the problem should be easily solvable.

  Problem solved. It seems I had a corrupt install of 8.0 Pro. I just downloaded the Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 Trial and it works great. I’ll take it from here, but thanks for everyone’s help.

  I hope to have some real questions going forward.
