  • How do I take advatage of my quadcore for AE CS3?

Now I’m sure this info is out there somewhere, but after searching I had no luck. I have a 2.4 AMD quad core, I’m on a PC running xp at 32 bit. I have 2 gig of ram ddr2 1066 ( may be a little off there). My graphics card also supports open GL and I do use it. Today I was looking through the preferences seeing what I could do to get particular to render quicker. I came to the intelligent thought “Uhm…” and realized I did not know what to do. Are there any preferences I can change to make sure that after effects take full advantage of my system? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    sincerely,

Under preferences, go to Multiprocessing and check the box. Pay attention to the RAM requirements for multiprocessing, as each core needs it’s own chunk of RAM. I run a dual core and leave the RAM settings at default with no problems, but a quad may need to tweak the RAM settings. Good luck!

Thanks a lot! I think I got it.

AE Multiprocessing really needs a full 2GB RAM per CPU core to really use all four processors. You can dial the memory allotted to each core really low, essentially forcing it to use all your cores, but with each getting so little RAM you probably won’t see any performance gain.

Unfortunately, being on a 32-bit system limits what you can do to improve this. The short answer is that AE Multiprocessing is, for the most part, a 64-bit OS feature (XP/Vista 64-bit or OSX).
