  importing more mpg clips with media import

  With Sony Vegas 0.0b, clips saved from Sony HDD camera on computer disk, these clips are in mpg format.
  I am trying to import more than 700 mpg clips with media import, because I need to see all of them, as I need to trim from each clip some part. The overall size of clips is 25 GB.
  If I import it at once, it takes more than two hours and never finishes, it finishes with message “some clips have errors, do you want to select different, or ignore one, or ignore all…”. Whatever I select, ends with crash.
  If I import clips in lets say 10-20pcs, it looks nice, but after getting one half of clips, it finishes as before. I try also to save the project, but then after the crash, it cannot load the saved project, without reason, just cannot.
  Is there some limitation of number or size of imported clips?
  For explanation, I have enough disk space, more than 100GB, my PC has 4GB RAM, it is a quad core machine…
  I tried also to convert mpg to DV, but I cannot do this, because those 25 GB would be nearly one TB.

  I’ve never used a Sony HDD camera but I do have a Sony HVR-DR60 hard disk recording unit and I used the Vegas media import once but didn’t like how it worked. The HVR-DR60 came with it’s own import utility that I liked a lot better and that’s what I use now. Did your camera come with any software to import the media to your hard drive? If so, I would use that.

  Importing is just a file copy. In the case of my DR60 the unit is FAT32 formatted so it must split long files at 4GB boundaries. The import utility stitches these back together into the original length of the clips I shot. I didn’t think that Vegas did this which is another reason I use the DR60 utility instead. It gives me my original shot lengths back.

  My point is, that Vegas import is nothing more that an elaborate file copy. Does the Sony HDD show up as an external drive on your PC. If so, why not just drag and drop the files onto your PC hard drive and forget Vegas import all together? Then just work with the files on your hard drive. (just something to try)
