Video Editing Monitors & Other Hardware
Posted by Anthony Uccello on October 1, 2008 at 6:56 pmMy birthday is coming up so I want to upgrade my video editing desk.
Right now I have a drobo, dual core pentium pc, and a 17” flat screen.
I find my screen is too small and I want more space. What would you recommend for a dual monitor set up?
Also, what other hardware can you suggest that will help me make my editing area more elite?

October 1, 2008 at 7:54 pmI have two Acer 22 inch widesceen monitors. Acer makes nice monitors and they come at a good price. Check out CDW.com, they always have great prices. I also got an HP xw8600 Workstation with 8gigs of Ram, that should make your editing area very elite!

October 1, 2008 at 8:12 pmI have 2 gigs of ram but 4 bay slots. Would it make my video editing faster if I popped them out and put in 4 2gb ram’s?
I thought my dual core was what would make my editing fast but its still choppy. Would ram fix this?

October 2, 2008 at 1:18 amAnthony, if you are running a 32 bit version of Windows you can only use a little bit more than 3 gb of RAM, if you put in more it won’t make a difference. To use more than that you need to have a 64 bit version of windows. So if you upgrade to Vista 64 bit and 4×2 gb RAM modules you’ll be set.

October 2, 2008 at 2:04 amOh man I wouldn’t curse any computer with vista. I was stupid enough to buy that when it came out…I think I had about 2 drivers working….
I run XP professional now and always…..

October 2, 2008 at 3:42 amAnthony, it’s hard to know from short internet comments how much someone knows about computers so if this reply seems obvious I apologize. Just because you have XP Pro doesn’t mean you have a 64 bit OS. WXPPro comes in 32 bit and 64 bit flavors so if you have the former you’ll still need to upgrade to the latter.

October 2, 2008 at 3:57 amOh don’t apologize, I didn’t know that ram bit until you told me. I found out I have a 32 bit system but only 2 gigs of ram so I went out and got myself another 2 gigs on your recommendation (it should at the very least make it 50% faster than it is now!)
It was much appreciated:)
I think later I will get a whole new computer and max the ^(&# out of it for just video editing. That way I can put vista on it and not worry about the billion and one drivers that don’t work right as I will only use it for my sweet sweet sony vegas:)

October 2, 2008 at 2:38 pmAnthony, I’m in the same boat in that I have no interest in loading Vista. I’ll be waiting for Windows 7 before I think about changing operating systems. Until then if you want faster editing then CPU upgrades are going to help more than ram, especially with the ram limit (3.3 gigs I think?)
As for your original question, obviously it depends on what kind of money you’re looking to spend, but nothing helps workflow like more screen real estate. 22″ Acer screens were mentioned and they’re certainly a good bargain, but for my personal taste, I just don’t enjoy having two separate screens unless you’re just using the second one as a monitor. I prefer just having a single 24″ at 1920×1200 so everything can be kept on one display, then an external television as a monitor. That may be overkill unless this is a big birthday, but even one 22″ would be a big step up from that 17″.

October 2, 2008 at 3:22 pmYea I was at a toss up, although I found a NICE 26” monitor for only $400 and it got good reviews so I think it’s quite the deal.

At the very least using ONE big monitor will really help my editing ease. I will at the very least use the dual monitor for external purposes.
Cheers

October 2, 2008 at 7:38 pmWe have been using Vista Ultimate with complete success on 4 different workstations – Core 2 Duo 6600, 2 Gig Ram, Matrox Parhelia 3 monitor display card. We build our own workstations and will soon upgrade to faster procs and more ram. We are currently on Vegas 8.0c and plan on installing Vista 64bit and Vegas 8.1 once we receive a little more feedback from those who have successfully made the switch. Good Luck!
