  Mixing 16:9 and 4:3

  I apologize if this has been asked before. I searched but didn’t come up with anything.

  I have some 16:9 footage that I need to mix with 4:3 footage. I just switched to vegas and am learning the software now. I captured both in vegas and it looks as though I could just add bars to the side of the 16:9 footage to match the 4:3 footage and then author using the NTSC widescreen. Will that work? Also, how do I add bars on the side? A filter in Media fx?

  Why would you make the 16:9 into 4:3 and then render as 16:9? I would think that after changing the 16:9 to 4:3 you would just render as 4:3 (since that’s all you would have).

  If you want the final output to be widescreen then I would use a 16:9 project and leave the 16:9 footage alone and add a colored border to the 4:3 footage to make it look nicer (like they do on the HD news). Just add a track below all of the other video tracks with the border you want.

  If you really want to limit the 16:9 to 4:3 you could use Pan/Crop with the 4:3 Standard TV aspect ratio preset on the 16:9 events and that will crop them to 4:3.
