> First, is 4 hours normal? I am running Vegas on a Pentium 4, 2.80GHz with 1.00GB RAM.
Yes, that sounds perfectly normal for 2 hrs of video and a single core processor. That’s only 2x real-time which isn’t that bad considering you are resizing each and every frame from HD resolution down to SD DVD resolution on top of anything else you added in the way of FX.
> Do I need more RAM etc to speed ths render process up?
Yes, more RAM means less swapping to disc and that always speeds thing up a bit. I would recommend that 2GB is the minimum when working with HD where each frame is 5x larger than SD/DV. What you really need is more processing power. A single 2.8GHz processor is bare minimum. An upgrade to a DualCore or QuadCore would give you more of a speed boost than adding more memory.
> Alternatively, should I render several movies as opposed to one long one?
No, not necessarily. If your work can be split up it would certainly help the fact that the render fails after 3 hrs since hopefully no one part would take 3 hrs. Are you sure your PC is not overheating? Long renders cause heat buildup and I’ve seen PC’s fail due to heat problems. Check inside that your PC and especially your CPU are not filled with dust! Clogged heat sink fins will cause overheating during long renders.
