Help with rendering issue
We are using Vegas Pro 8 and a combination of both SD and HD footage that we are editing.
All editing is done viewing on a LCD monitor and then when rendered down to PAL DVD the issue becomes visible.
On the PC screen everything looks great, once rendered however the SD footage is great, but the HD footage seems to suffer far more. It is more noticeable in footage that is fairly bright. This footage was taken in the Australian outback so the light can be quite harsh at times. In certain pieces of footage when rendered and played back on a standard CRT TV screen the picture seem to shimmer, more so in the brighter shots. This is not evident at all on the LCD monitor when editing. It is also not evident on either monitor from the SD video.
I am going to take the DVD to a store tomorrow and have them play it for me on a HD LCD / Plasma screen to see if it does the same thing. Maybe out old CRT TV is on the blink, maybe its something else.
If anyone has any suggestions / ideas I would be most appreciative to hear them. As I stated the issue only seems to be with the HD footage. It is being rendered to mpeg2 using primarily the settings that I have read through other posts on this forum.
Thanks for reading and hopefully someone has seem this before, or its just our old TV that doesnt want to play.

Just a shot in the dark but I shimmer could be a field order problem and HD is upper field first and SD is lower field first so perhaps having them both in the same project is causing this. DVD MPEG-2 is also lower field first which would make the HD the odd one out. Try rendering a section of the HD footage that shimmers to progressive and add that to your project with the SD footage. Then do a test render and see if it changes anything. Like I said, it’s just a shot in the dark.

I probably didnt explain myself real well. The issue is not so much with the mixing of the formats. It seems more pronounced in just a straight HD render.
Seems that when there are bright areas in the video or movement such as long grass being blown by a pretty strong wind that is when it is happening.
As I said this has been on an old CRT TV. We actually went out yesterday and purchased a 46″ LCD and the rendered video does look much better than on the CRT, but not as good as I was expecting though. Maybe my expectations are just too high perhaps.
We also have to assume that potentially many people would still be watching on CRT so that is my concern. It should look better than it does. Maybe it is something I am doing wrong in the rendering, wrong settings or something.
Technology gets so confusing sometimes.

Well, grass blowing… water falling… smoke flowing… lots of any motion are challenging for HDV. The MPEG-2 stream falls apart rather rapidly under these conditions. I was shocked when I first saw it but even a water fall on HDTV shows compression artifacts because there just isn’t enough bits to represent what is there. Perhaps this is what you are seeing.

Yes I have to say I was also a little shocked to see it. The strange this is that it doesnt appear to do it on the PC monitor. Its only really evident on the old CRT TV. On the PC monitor it looks just fine and on the 46″ it looks pretty damn good as well, but being a larger screen and all there is some of this evident.
I guess I am looking at what I can do to improve it for playback on jusgt a normal TV, as manyh family members we will send it to and friends do not have LCD or Plasma screens to watch it on.
