Rerendering to DVD quality using DVD quality source files
Howdy folks,
I’ve got a question regarding loss of quality when rerendering to DVD NTSC quality using DVD NTSC files that I’ve already rendered. Basically, my situation is this:
I have two separate large project files consisting of many clips, both of which I’ve rendered into their final NTSC quality MPEG versions. Now, I want to append one to the end of the other. So, Option 1: Go back into the project files and dump one into the other, then render the whole thing, which will take a lot of time and effort. Or Option 2: Take both of my final MPEG DVD quality files into a new Vegas project and export them together at DVD quality, nice and neat and easy.
But with option 2, I’m wondering, do I lose a lot of quality, or any at all? It seems intuitively that I wouldn’t, since it wouldn’t remove any more information that the same compressor already removed in the first pass, but I don’t know.

If it is compliant and you are using Vpro8 it may not recompress thus resulting in no loss of quality.
However, why don’t you just put both files in a DVD A project and set the end action of one to start the other? it seems like this would save you a lot of time.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if this also applies to other DVD quality files that were not necessarily made using the same compressor? IE, how much degradation occurs when recompressing any given DVD quality file to DVD quality?
Just adding it in DVD Architect would be an OK idea, except for the fact that I need to be able to go back and forth in the chapters from any given point, using the chapter buttons. In my experience, when you add a second video to a first, if you’re at a playback point in the second, you can’t get back to the first using the chapter buttons. Unless there is a setting or something that I could change to make that happen?

Give Womble a try as it will allow you to stitch two mpeg files together without recompression so no worries.
However, you may be able to get away with one re encode, but anything over that should start showing a lot of artifacting. Even getting away with one may be questionable depending on your source footage and original encode settings.
