  • Video playing on a flexing grid of particles

    Hey

I’ve had a look at various particle effects in After Effects but can’t seem to get what I’m looking for, so I’m bringing the question here.

Does anyone know how to create a grid of particles (doesn’t specifically have to use particles, but that’s the best way to describe what I’m thinking of) that can have a video playing over the top, with each particle, or ‘box’, playing 10×10 pixels of the video (for example). The boxes would have to have a slight gap between each other, so they’re not totally connected, and I’d also be looking for the particles in the grid to be flexing (gently stretching forwards and backwards, with the video moving with it.)

    Hopefully someone can help.

    Thanks

    Nick

    Hmm Card Wipe maybe ?

As for the flexing I wonder if Fractal Noise could be used to drive something with the layers luminance ?

Thanks guys, I’ll have a look into those!

Check out Harry J. Frank`s (https://www.graymachine.com) tutorials “Particular 4D Fractal” and “Particular Halftone Effect”. May be it’s something what you looking for… with some tweaking and may be combining these two techniques.

I believe Mr. LaRonde has the answer you are looking for.

Import your footage. Apply the card dance effect. Set up the rows and columns to your own taste. Then, create a new solid and apply a fractal noise effect. Alt click the stopwatch on evolution and type “time*360” or whatever number you want to make the noise change faster or slower. Precompose the fractal noise layer. Back in card dance, change gradient 1 to the precomp fractal, change z position to intensity and play with the multiplier to get the effect you are looking for.

If you want, you can also create a camera, then choose “comp camera” from the camera system dialogue box to use the comp camera. Then animate as you see fit.

The only thing this wont to is put small spaces in between your blocks. Hey, we all must make some sacrifices.

    Hope this helps

Also there is another approach for those who do not want to sacrifice 🙂
Break your video with Grid filter into boxes/particles/whatever (you can combine it with Fractal Noise) so it will have gaps between them and then with help of Zaxwerks 3d Layer Warp (or 3D Flag… or Forge Freeform… or ReVision ReFlex) turn your layer into real 3d layer so you can wave, bend etc. it
So as you can see there are so many approaches you can take. It’s completely up to you what to choose. Does not matter what you use… just make it look great! 🙂 And of course, all we do whole our life is sacrificing. Unfortunately.

You can apply some fixed X and Y downscaling to the tiles, something like .9.
That would in effect create space inbetween the different tiles.
