  Vegas 6 + Dual Head video,Firewire, DellGX-260 = Lockup

  Hello
  With the configuration mentioned, Vegas locks up the machine when we try to capture video.
  On board video is disabled in device manager, Fire wire card works like it should, but it locks up the machine every time. Putting it back to on board video, and pulling the dual head card from the cage, it works fine. Captures as it should. We tried 2 different dual head cards and it happens on both vendors cards. ( ATI and PNY )
  Any clues as to what may be the issue here?

  GX260 – 2 gig ram, SATA drive and controller, IDE primary drive, DVD burner, I think a 2 gig processor, Firewire card that is iIEEE that Sony mentions in the manual, SIIG firewire card

  That’s a really old computer from 2002. From what I can find on the web, it only supports AGP graphics. Were those AGP cards you were using? I remember that some vendors cut corners and didn’t implement the full AGP spec, especially with motherboards that already had on-board video and Dell is notorious for cutting corners and selling crippled hardware.

  I would check and make sure that the on-board video is disabled in the BIOS. Using Device manager alone may not be enough. Disabling in the BIOS will ensure that no software can accidentally enable it again.

  There is definitely a conflict going on here, you just have to find out what it is. Perhaps the firewire and graphics card are sharing the same IRQ? That is not a bad thing in and of itself because I lot of devices share IRQ’s, but some devices just don’t share them well together. These things can be hard to find and sometimes even harder to fix because Windows XP doesn’t let you control the IRQ’s anymore.

  Go into the Windows Device Manager and select View | Resources by type. Open up Interrupt request (IRQ) and look for your graphics card and firewire card. If they both have the same IRQ number next to them this may be the source of the problem.

  Maybe try an old PCI graphics card if you can find one. The old hardware is very hard to find these days. Good luck.
