Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Splitting “Title 1” into multiple other titles

  • Splitting “Title 1” into multiple other titles

First, I have searched the forums for this question, but could not. If this question has already been answered, please direct me to it with my apologies. Also, my question is about DVD architect, so kind of Vegas.

I have one large video that was originally a VHS. I have divided it into 30 chapters, some of which are studio footage, others music videos, with some live footage. I would like to create a way to watch a single type of footage at a time, back-to back, in addition to watching the entire main video. Because the footage is too tightly mingled in it’s original presentation, rendering it as multiple files would produce 13 files and ruins the continuity of not only the title and chapters but the video itself. The help file says of playlists:

“Each playlist contains a user-defined sequence of movies, chapter markers, music/video compilations, or picture compilations…”

However, chapters aren’t available for use in playlists, only the entire movie. I know what I want is possible because certain DVDs behave as such. For example, my ER DVDs hierarchy is:

    Title 1: Episodes 1-4 (24 chapters total)
    |- Title 2: Episode 1 (6 chapters total)
    |- Title 3: Episode 2 (6 chapters total)
    |- Title 4: Episode 3 (6 chapters total)
    |- Title 5: Episode 4 (6 chapters total)
    |- Title 6: Deleted Scenes (~4 chapters)

Title 1 stays “title 1” throughout all four episodes, so I assume it’s one long video. And therefore it’s possible to then take that video and divide it into smaller titles that end when the title does. This is what I’d like DVD Architect to do, but I haven’t found a reasonable way to do so that doesn’t involve cutting my video into cumbersome pieces.

    Any help is appreciated.

Here what you want to do: Drop the one long video onto your DVD Architect menu. Ctrl+Drag the button as many times as you want to make a copy for each chapter you want to string together. (it sounds like you need to do this 30 times). Double-click on each chapter button and set the in and out points to just play that chapter.

Let’s say that what you want in the end is 4 buttons: 1) Play All 2) In The Studio 3) Music Videos 4) Live Performances.

Here’s the tricky part. Insert a new menu but remove the navigation to it. This will be a hidden menu for the 26 buttons you don’t need to see. Determine which 4 buttons will be the starting points and drag all of the other buttons to the other menu. Now start with the first chapter for “In The Studio” and double-click on it to navigate into. Go to End Actions and set the Link to whatever the next chapter/button is for studio footage. Then double-click on that button and set it’s end action to the next button, etc. This is how you can build chains that navigate in any order you want.

I show you some of how to do this in VASST Absolute Training for Vegas+DVD, Vol. 3 “Getting started with DVD Architect”. In particular I show you exactly how to do what the ER DVD you mentioned does. I don’t show you the hidden menu piece but it’s pretty straight forward and is only needed when you need to jump over sections of video. Each jump needs it’s own in and out point.

OK, so basically your hidden menu method is just a convoluted playlist. Also, it doesn’t force all of the footage under one title, same as with a playlist. I’m coming to the realization there is no way to place non-linear segments of a video under a single title without re-rendering them separately. If this assumption is incorrect (or if I may have done something wrong executing your method) I’m happy to be corrected.

the thing is, with john’s method you’re only using ONE video. only one render.

Yes, I understand that only one video is rendered with separate in/out points. It does not, however, solve my problem of wanting several, non-linear sections of a video under a single title. For that it appears I will have to render a separate compilation.

    > It does not, however, solve my problem of wanting several, non-linear sections of a video under a single title.

Yes it does. You simply make the end action of each button link to the next button. The you hide the buttons in the middle that you don’t want exposed (or use them as discrete chapter points that play and return to the menu).

If you don’t understand how it’s done please feel free to ask questions about my explanation. How far did you get? What did you experience? I do this all the time so I know it works.

OK, let’s take “Live Music” as an example. To simplify the procedure, for each group (1-3 songs/chapters) I added the main video and set in/out points at the start and end of each group. I then added each group’s “movie” to a menu and set the end action for each group to the proceeding group. This accomplishes the goal of placing non-linear sections of the main video back-to-back, but according to Vegas Preview (I haven’t made a disc yet, it takes too long for DVD9) each group remains its own title. As such, it also won’t navigate backwards to previous titles. Playlists exhibit the exact same behavior. I can’t imagine doing this for each chapter will affect the outcome. I don’t know what else would be helpful to tell you.

This is not quite the procedure I explained. The secret is to add the main movie only once and then ctrl+drag/copy the buttons. If you’re not doing that, then this is why the DVD is becoming too big.

    > As such, it also won’t navigate backwards to previous titles. Playlists exhibit the exact same behavior.

You are correct. You cannot navigate backwards because this is not a continuous piece of media. The links only navigate forward but they will give you a “Play Music” button that plays only the music parts in order.
