I just bought a Sony HDR-HC5 on vacation. It’s a HD 1080 camcorder. When I try to capture with Vegas 8 Pro, it recognizes the camera when in DV mode. As soon as I switch the camera to HD mode, I get an error over the capture preview window that says “The device “Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit” device could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application or user. When you close the error box, the blue preview capture screen says “Preview is turned off”
How do I solve the problem? I even changed the properties in Vegas to HD1080i.

Are you using the built in HD-SDI capture utility ? Then make sure
you select the device (ieee 1394/mpeg2-ts device).
Or you can try a free tool name “CapDVHS” and see how well it captures.

Just to expand on what Steve said. There are two capture programs that come with Vegas. One for DV and one for HDV. Make sure you are using the correct one.

    Your statement:

    > When I try to capture with Vegas 8 Pro, it recognizes the camera when in DV mode. As soon as I switch the camera to HD mode, I get an error over the capture preview window that says “The device “Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit” device could not be opened.

Leads me to believe that you are trying to capture HDV with the DV capture utility because it sounds like you switched your camera into HD mode while using the DV capture. This will not work as you have seen.

You should start with your camera unplugged from your computer. Then switch it into HD mode. Then plug it into the computer and use the HD-SDI capture utility as Steve recommended.

Doesn’t work that way. If I go into Vegas, go to “Option/Preferences/Video Tab”, then UNCHECK “Use external video capture, and apply, then go to “capture video”, it will recognize it, but according to the manual, there is a radio button to choose either DV or HD (which there is none). Also, when I uhcheck the external video capture mode, the preview area goes from the big screen, to one that is barely visible (not really, but a very small area) Is there not a way that it can be set up to recognize what ever camera you hook up, whether it be DV or HD, without having to change all this stuff every time?

    Belinda,
You are missing the point what John and i are trying to tell you…
On the vegas toolbar, there is a button to choose either DV or HD, if its not there, (go to ‘options’ and select ‘customize toolbar’, you will see the camera icon in the listings to your left, select it
and add it to the toolbar).
Now when you click this button, a prompt will come up asking if you want to capture DV OR HDV-SDI….Choose HDV-SDI and you follow from there along with pointers that we gave you. If its not recognizing the camera, follow what John pointed out.

I see where you are saying now. I have that on Vegas 6. But on my other comp w/8.0 it doesn’t come up that way. On it, when I press file/capture or use the video capture icon on the toolbar, the capture preview window comes up. It doesn’t give you the option of choosing DV/HD on my V8. Why would it be any different between 6/8?

It isn’t different, it means you have changed the default setting for it.Try resetting vegas, it should return things back to where it was.
METHOD: By pressing the ctrl and shift keys while vegas is launching.

But before you do this..try unchecking ‘use external video application’
under the video tab in preferences first…then press the camera
icon on the toolbar and see if it gives you the option.
