  • Proper Pixelaspect Ratio for 16:9

Posted by Tom Karlemo on March 28, 2008 at 8:58 am

Ive been using the Vegas Movie Studio 4.0 and Im now testing the Pro 8.0 version. Im still a bit confused when it comes to project properties and pixelaspect ratios.

Im filming with a 2003y sony dv camera that has a true 16:9 format. When I upload the video onto my vegas software it shows up as 1,4568 pal dv widescreen 720x576x24. As project properties I chose 1.0926 pal dv width720 height480. Is this correct? As I render my final project, do I need to change any settings? What is the proper rendering format if I want to make the best possible DVD for viewing it on TV?

Assuming you want to stay in widescreen mode, your project properties should be set the same as your source video (1.4568 pal dv widescreen 720x576x24).
1.0926 pal dv width720 height480 is for 4:3 video, not widescreen.

Your render settings should reflect this as well (PAL DV Widescreen).

Mike, thanks for your input. My media properties are 1.4568 pal dv widescreen 720x576x24 but if I put the project properties to match I get squashed frame captures when pasted into paint shop pro as picktures. If I set the project properties to 1,0926 (PAL DV) PAL DV (720×576; 25,000 fps) I can see two black stripes up and down in the preview window but frameshots pasted into paint shop pro gives me that exact same view with the black stripes above and below leaving the actual frame capture or photo if you so like intact and in perfect aspect ratio. Am I doing something wrong? Result this way is correct but not sure when I render it to a video.

Tom, is your Preview Window set to Best/Full when capturing a frame? This is done to get the highest quality snapshot.
Also, right-click in the Preview window and set it to “Simulate Device Aspect Ratio”.
Let me know if that helps.
