    Greetings all,

In searching around stored stuff in garage I found some great old VHS ski movies from circa 1988-91.
All Greg Stump Production film shot with real film.
So, I’m capturing these videos with something called a “CuteBox” USB converter.
It works relatively well considering it only cost $80US.
Anyway, it records as AVI file in 4GB chunks. I’ve tested the AVIs with Win Media Player and they all play well.

Here’s the rub: I open with Vegas 8.0 and only the Audio is imported.

What do I have to tweak?
    Thanks…

If you are a skier and you’ve never seen “Blizzard of AHHS” or “Licensed to Thrill” you need to get the DVDs…Amazon of course. End Greg Stump promo. 🙂
This is so damn much fun!

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the USB capture. Instead capture via firewire. If you don’t have a camera that can convert the analog to firewire, look a a convertor like the Canopus ADVC series or an ADS Pyro. There are others that are the same type of device as well.

Are you suggesting that the bits captured by FireWire are different than USB? Or might it be metadata that is not getting transfered?
As this device has FireWire, too, I’ll see what happens on a 1394 capture.

I am capturing VHS footage as AVI in NTSC mode, It creates very large files: 1 GB = 3 minutes.

As I mentioned I can playback the captured track with Windows Media Player and it looks great.

Do you think there may be a missing codec on my Vegas install?

    Ed,
Here is more info. If I use GSpot to get info from captured tape here is what it details:

    File length correct-
    Multipart OpenDML AVI (4 parts)

    PCM Audio

    44100Hz 1411 kb/s tot (2 chnls)
    Codec YUY2 packed 4:2:2
    No codec required
    Pics/s 29.970 Frms/s 29.970

    pic w 320x 240

I a bit confused on this as everything looks ok. Is there a possibility that Vegas has a problem with a 4GB file?

~firewire is DV. Edward is right in suggesting you ditch USB
    ~USB is proc-dependent. 1394 is not.
~USB may not be DV (and from your other post, isn’t).
~Looks like you’re importing an MJPEG codec, which isnt’ optimal under any circumstances.

not to hijack, but reading what your saying Douglas is capturing to vegas 8 w/xdcam hd via pdw-u1 usb NOT as optimal as firewire straight out of the camera? just curious

That’s not just a hi-jack, it’s a change of subject equal to going from talking about round tires to talking about Swiss cheese.
Please don’t confuse capture with file transfer. There is little to zero relationship, particularly when there is an A to D involved.

Sorry if it seems like a spank.
The topic is analog to digital conversion and transfer to a hard drive. The sub-topic is codecs.
Your question relates to media already digital (at camera) already on a drive (at camera) and already wrapped in a codec read-able by Vegas (.mxf).

Transferring from an already digitized format already wrapped in a codec already on a digital storage device isn’t related to this topic.

Happy to answer your question if you’d like to pose it in a new thread.

    You win!
I just ordered the Canopus ADVC110 from NewEgg: $237 delivered.

My new PC is littered with 1394 ports.

Note that this Canopus product does not include a power supply which has PO’d a few users. It is a 5V DC and is optional @ $35.
    This thing must be great!
Cloud of sarcasm just flew over.

    Thanks Guys.
    I appreciate the help.
Boy, this is getting to be an expensive hobby. But what worthwhile hobby isn’t?
