Media Offline
Just yesterday I was working on a video, everything was fine. When I opened it this morning, it said on the screen that all media was offline. I don’t know how this happened, all my media is still on the computer! Usually when it says “media offline” it comes back very quickly but now it doesn’t and I don’t know how to change it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.

Your hard drive may have changed drive letters?
Simply let Vegas search for missing media, then reassociate just one of the files. All the others shall follow suit.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Seems like the solution, but how can you let Vegas look for the missing files? I can’t figure that out…

whn you open Vegas and the project, it will search for missing files.
If you’ve left your computer on all night and the files are missing, it might suggest you’re using anti-virus. Not a good idea if this is the case.Douglas Spotted Eagle

I opened Vegas & my project and no missing files were found. When I drag a video file into one of the tracks, only the audio is visible and works. This is what it says for the video: stream attributes could not be determined. The thing is, the files I want to use give trouble, but some others work fine. Could it have something to do with the extension? Or the codecs? Either way, it’s odd because I turned the computer off during the night so nothing changed, and still, yesterday it worked and now it doesn’t.

wow..I just had the same problem happen to me.
I was edited footage from my hdv camera yesterday. I left the computer on all night, (i DO have a anti-virus program), and today when I opened my project it says my files went offline. The files have NOT moved from thier original location! And when I click to find and get the files online again the m2t files cannot be found.
So im guessing this happened because of my norton anti-virus, but can anyone tell me how to FIX the problem and get my project to relocate my footage? I would hate to have lost all of that hard work!

The problem might be that you have checked the 12 box in Options > Preferances “Close media files when not the active application” This makes your media offline because you have switched applications. This should bring your media back. Happy editing.

I, too, and frustrated by this feature of Sony Vegas Movie Studio.
When I copy a folder, all of the files in that folder get the drive letter of the hard disk I copied them to- so why do they continue to reference the original folder where the non-copy was created?
It’s truly maddening. Is there a way to tell Sony to IGNORE what drive letter a file was saved under? It would make my life heaps easier.

Because the project file maintains the absolute path to all of the files it needs including the hard drive letter which is required in systems with more than one hard drive.

No, why are you moving projects between drives and continuing to work on them? Are you moving an external drive to multiple computers? If so, the easier solution is to configure the computers to see that drive as the same letter on each PC.

Hi John, thanks for the reply.
I’m not continuing to work on a project moved to another drive- I’m just trying to back up a project and all of its files so that in the event that the original drive fails, I’ll be able to continue where I left off on the other drive. Because the copy of the project still wants to point to the original files and not the ones nested in its own folder on the second drive, if anything happens to the original project on the first drive, the project on the second drive can’t find the files it needs and won’t open.
Do you know of a better way to make backups? I guess I don’t understand how I’m supposed to do it, hence my confusion.

A backup is just that… a back up, never to be used in production. If your first drive fails, the assumption is that you will replace it and copy the files from the backup to the original drive and the project will now be pointing to the correct place. You never work from your backups. They are a “safety” copy and should not be used directly.
