  • Adding a video tv wall effect in Vegas 8

Posted by Carlo Simone on December 5, 2007 at 4:56 pm

    Hello all,

I want to be able to add the effect of a video clip looking like it is spanned across 16 tv’s like they do on a video production wall. Is this possible in Vegas 8?? I have tried on Vegas 7 with no positive results. I hope I am explaining this correctly. Just picture twelve or sixteen 24″ tv’s connected together on a video wall showing one feed. Is this possible??

    Thanks..

Ultimate S or Excalibur (I forget which) has a script that does a video wall automatically. But basically it is a set up of PiPs 3×3 or 4×4 or whatever number you want. It does not look like a television set but pictures (withor without borders). This can be done without the script but is much easier with it.

Actually, both Excalibur and Ultimate S do this via scripts.
You can do it by hand, just turn on a grid and line em’ up.

I think that you are referring to 1 clip all cut up and playing on a bunch of screens at the same time, right? I don’t think he was reffering to a buch of clips on a video wall. Is the video wall in both programs able to use only one clip, and cut it up across the screen and play all of them simeltaeously?

I read it the same. One image spread over a bunch of TVs instead of seperate images.
I did this a while back and what I did was make a mask in Photoshop, black lines, set at the aspect ration so I had 12 boxes. Transparent background and layed it on track 1 and the video on track 2. It looked pretty decent. I was just looking for the mask in hopes I could email to you but I seem to have ‘misplaced’ somewhere on one of my drives but it’s fairly simple to make in a photo edit program.

I was referring to 1 cilp spread over a bunch of tv’s. Is this possible to do in Ultimate S or is my only solution to create the template mask in Photoshop. I am not an experienced Photoshop user therefore I would like for a script to do it in Vegas if possible.. Thanks for all your help thus far..

So what you are looking for is the apearance of one single video filling the screen with like a tic-tac-toe lines laid over the top?

Yes! That’s a good way of looking at it….

to my knowledge there really isn’t a way to do this in Vegas but creating the mask in photoshop isn’t all that hard.
First open a NEW project use the NTSC template when you open up the menu for a new project.
Now go to the TOOLS and pick the LINE tool-don’t worry about the size as you can set it to exactly what size you want.
Layout the lines where you want them and use the sizing tool and size them accordingly. Make sure you set the background to TRANSPARENT when you set the template.
Save as a PNG and bring it into Vegas-plqace on top track and place the video footage on track below the grid.
    That should get you started.

I am a new VEGAS user-Vegas 7. The video wall can be done in VEGAS 7, although you may want to embellish it.
Put the video you want to see on the screens on the low track. On an upper track use an image of a wall-brick, wood, whatever and make it the same length as the video on track 1.
Apply the cookie cutter effect to the wall track.Choose rectangle as your shape. Use the X and Y repeat option to make as many rectangular “screens” as you want. Adjust the size of the creens as you want. Choose “cut away section” to see the low track video thru the upper track screens.
You can embellish it by using a cooky cutter that allows strokes, feathering, etc. and of course an interesting image as the wall holding the screens.
