Vegas Pro 8 supposedly can export to BD9 (Blu-Ray content on a regular DVD). However when I try to do that, whether I choose the Mpeg-2 option, or the Mp4 one, there’s a popup message telling me I have to buy their AC-3 encoder, and it doesn’t let me continue. Is that because I’m using the trial? I thought the trial was supposed to have full functionality for the 30 day period.

the trial does not offer AC3 encoding, because in that event, they’d be paying a royalty for the encoder.
I’m unaware of any claim by Sony of burning a standard disc with BD content that will play on a BD player. I know for certain that BD content on a standard disc will not play in the BD1 or 300 Blu-ray Disc players.

Vegas supports writing to AVCHD disks, which is similar, HD content burned to a standard DVD disk, but as DSE says, you need the full version to do AC3 encoding.
