I have often seen the suggestion that one should view their output on an external monitor because the colors on PC monitors are different from those of the TV’s the end product will be viewed upon. This suggestion was clearly written when all TV’s had CRT tubes. Is the same thing true with LCD monitors’? Can these be used for viewing final output?

    Thanks in advance

Viewing your output on an LCD monitor is still different than
viewing it on a NTSC video monitor. If your primary audience is watching on a TV then it is best to external monitor to a video monitor. Some of the differences are:

Video monitor’s are interlaced, LCD’s are progressive. This means that motion looks different on LCD’s as do graphics. Graphics that look perfectly good on a LCD monitor may flicker when shown on a (TV) video monitor.

Colors look different on Video Monitors than an LCD Display.
Video Monitor are underscanned. Don’t think LCD’s are.

Of course any monitoring device is only as good if it is properly calibrated. The best NTSC Monitor in the world will not help you if it is not properly setup (calibrated).

There are other areas where they are diiferent.
However, in the future as more homes are watching progressive HD, LCD’s start making more sence to me.

As you said more & more screens use progressive scan. All of my DVD players & TV screens are. Perhaps the way I should be going especially when making dvds for my home usage would be to have a PC connected directly to a large LCD screen that has PC input. You could potentially be sitting back in a comfortable chair & useing a cordless mouse & keyboard.

    Thanks in advance
