Upgrade To Sony Vegas 7 + DVD from Vegas 3

Hi,

I have vegas 3 and the serial number works for an upgrade disc for Vegas 7 + DVD at the sony vegas site. Some people tell me the vegas 7 upgrade won’t even work on 5 let alone 3. Is it possible to install over 3 or am I wasting my money to upgrade? Also, tips so it works or links to point me in the right direction would be helpful if it works. I read about installation location issues for 7 to find old versions.

The different numbered versions of Vegas install as an independant application, not over your existing version. Try installing the trail version if you like.

Thanks for your reply – are you saying YES, the upgrade WILL work with Vegas 3? Also, will dvd architect install too as I’m not sure if vegas 3 has a dvd authoring program. (just got it).

I’m getting the vegas 7 upgrade from someone who gave up installing it on version 5. Can you give me some hints as to what they may have done wrong that I should avoid (like install to a certain directory, anti virus software off, msconfig startup programs off, what else?)

To be specific: my vegas 3 has not yet arrived so I can’t try the trial version yet and I really need to know from you experts: YES or NO, will the sony vegas 7 upgrade accept vegas 3 as an upgradable version. (do I need to install both or only input the serial number of vegas 3?) I’m buying them from two different people but I don’t want to waste my money if they won’t work together. Thanks in advance

I’m confused. In your first post you say I have vegas 3 and the serial number works for an upgrade disc for Vegas 7 + DVD at the sony vegas site.
Then you go on to say …my vegas 3 has not yet arrived…

First of all, according to Sony, if Vegas 3 was used to do an upgrade to any newer version, it won’t work.
If it was never used for this (and it sounds like it wasn’t), then you’re OK.
If you’re still uncertain, then an email or phone call to Sony customer support should help clarify things for you.

Next, I started off with Vegas 3 and DVD Architect 1. I’ve successfully upgraded version by version to Vegas 7 and DVDA 4. Just make sure that you install the necessary utility apps (Microsoft’s .NET Framework, DirectX, etc.) and there shouldn’t be any problems.
As a side note, until recently I had all versions on my computer (a now lowly AMD 2200) and there was never a conflict.

YES

You will need the Vegas 3 serial number when ORDERING the upgrade (in order to qualify for the upgrade). You do not need to install Vegas 3. Just install Vegas 7 using the Vegas 7 serial number you will receive after purchasing the upgrade.

I appreciate your feedback. Sorry for the confusion – I did not want give away what I was trying to do – I had a great deal on two separate items at Ebay and was trying to win both if they would work together. The vegas 3 guy had given me the serial number to test so I knew it would work but I need to buy it (for my conscience although I know I could still use his serial but I don’t do that). I was afraid if I explained it was on Ebay that someone here might go there and outbid me but I was outbid anyway – can you believe I bid 97 and someone bid more for a 5th generation program. That’s impressive and says something about Vegas. I’ve been a premiere user for years but could not stomach the upgrade this time around and was ready to jump ship. I’m stuck with my old 6.2 but will definitely keep my eyes on vegas. It is impressive that you can have 3,4,5,6,7 all installed and working at the same time. I love my sony camcorder and assume their program is just as good. Thanks again for all your input.

You didn’t say what the total cost of this would be.
If it’s around $250, then definitely take a look at this deal from B&H.
It includes an installation CD for Vegas 6 as well as the upgrade disc to Vegas 7.0+DVD.

Thanks Mike, I’ll check out B&H. It would have been close. If I had won I would have had the old and new version for about 200. 250 is close enough.
