I am in the process of configuring a new computer to use primarily for video editing with Vegas 7. My question concerns the video card to choose. I understand that the rendering is a CPU intensive process and I am planning to choose an Intel duo core processor for that but what about viewing previews off the timeline. I am planning on capturing my video to a pair of RAID 0 SATA II drives to increase the read speeds but does the speed of the video card also play a part in viewing the previews?
I also use BluffTitler, Ulead Cool 3D, Boris FX and Graffiti. Will a faster video card help in viewing previews in these programs as well? Where does the speed of the video card play a part in video editing? I currently have an ATI 9800 Pro video card.
    Thanks

With the exception of Magic Bullet, a newer/better/faster video card won’t make any difference with Vegas.
As long as your current video card meets your needs, there’s really no reason to upgrade.

Boris Effects 7 can benifit from OPen GL acceleration. Check out there website for cards that qualify.

Vegas will not benefit from a better card however the other programs may
the link below very clearly explains everything you’re asking.
I ran across it doing research myself.
It really can make a difference. almost model specific depending on the software route you choose

Magic Bullet will benefit from Nvidia because it uses the processor on the card to speed renders – very effectively. ATI does not.

I’m in the same situation building a new comp for video editing using Vegas and after some research I will probably go with nvidia Geforce 7950 GT OC 512MB video card for around $325.00

Thanks so much for the link to the Videoguys article, it really helped. Now I’m trying to decide if I really need a Quadro FX card or if a Nvidia 8800 GTS with 320 MB would work nearly as well.
