  Rendering a 2.5 hour video…really slowly

  Hi all

  I just finished editing a 2.5 hour video of a vacation I recently took. I recall the last 1 hour video I rendered in Vegas 6 took about 4-5 hours, so I was anticipating an 8-10 hour render time on my latest video in Vegas 7.

  Well I started rendering last night before bed, and when I woke up, about 9 hours later, it was only 11% done. So obviously something is wrong, or a combination of things are wrong, that is leading to this absurdly slow render time.

  I’ve tried multiple settings with different codecs. I tried the latest DivX codec on medium quality, and it was still as slow. I tried the MPEG-2 video stream output and it was also just as slow. The intended output is putting it on a dual layer 8.5gb DVD. It doesn’t need to be stellar production quality, just good enough to send the home movies out to family and friends.

  Can anyone provide me with some tips on how to optimize my .veg file for faster rendering? Or some key render settings that will speed up my render times? I’ve always just used default settings (including using a “good” render output setting and not “best”) and it’s been fine, but the default settings will have my computer rendering for several days, which just won’t work for me since I need to do other computer intensive stuff during the day.

  This seems very slow on any computer. There may be many reasons. Do you have effects applied to entire time-lines? Do you do color corrections or similar on a very large number of clips? Since we do not know what you are doing and what type of computer you have, it is a little difficult to know for sure.

  If you can not find why the renders are as long as they are (check effects etc), you can render sections of the time line one by one. Create a loop region of the first 20 minutes, render it. Do the next 20 and render that and so on.

  I’d first try to figure out what slows down your render though. On my PC, a dual-core AMD box, rendering 2.5 hours of video to MPEG-2 started as I go to bed would be done long before I enter REM sleep.
