  • Strange things happening with DVDA when burning

Posted by Paul Gregory on November 12, 2006 at 12:55 am

I posted a message about 10 days ago saying that I wished to see it were possible to burn a project that had options to to view both a 4×3 & a 16×9 version of the same content. Using DVDA 3 I finally was able get it to display correctly in preview mode in either ratio.

A couple of things that I noticed in doing this. I had included a ‘extra’ file on the disk & I noticed that if I went to file>optomize DVD it gave me a file size & the percentage of the disk that this would need. The figure was wrong because it didn’t include the size of the ‘extra file’.

I also noted that it listed all of the files that had to be recoded before burning. There was something strange about this as well because I could easily tell that the suggested file size for my main video was double what it should be displaying as well as double what the explorer window was saying. I was always under the impression that multiple copies of the same file could be included in a project but that this would not increase the total space required on the DVD. Somewhere along the line the program must have gotten confused. The file>optomize DVD screen said that the project was 96% of disk, yet when I tried to burn the disk the program stopped because of insufficient disk space.

Any ideas as to what went wrong?

    Thanks in advance

I had a similar report of “double” space in DVDA4 once, but I imported the clip into DVDA3 where it was correctly reported, saved then reopened that project in DVDA4 and it was stillcorrect. Since then the double estimate hasn’t happened again. Someone else had a similar experience, so there is or was something strange going on.

Incidentally, I was pleased when including a 16:9 clip in an otherwise 4:3 DVDA project that it played in full un-letterboxed widescreen from the disc.

This also creates a problem because I wanted to have both files plus the ‘extra’ file on the disk without dropping the bit rate & I can’t even though there should be plenty of space in the disk.

Since the last posting I have confirmed the file size because I eventually got a DVD burned which DVDA told had me would be 96%. Windows Explorer look at the file on the DVD & it’s only 3.7GB so I should have been able to get the ‘extras’ on the disk as well. I suppose that there is a workaround for this problem that should work. I could tell DVDA that I’m using a dual layer disk & have it create a file on the hard drive for the project, then use something like Nero to burn the disk since the correct size should be picked up by Nero.

    Thanks in advance

Yes, if DVDA is playing up at the burning stage, then just use it to prepare, then burn with Nero, Record Now or whatever you use …
